Big Idea
Impulse control is like having a remote control for your brain . It allows us to Pause, Rewind, and think before we Play our next move. This lesson builds that "Pause" muscle through play.
Lesson Sequence
Introduction: The Brain's Remote
5 MINS
Start with a hook: "Imagine you have a remote control that works on your body. Sometimes we hit 'Play' too fast!" Discuss what an impulse is (a sudden urge to do something without thinking). Ask for examples like shouting out or running when we should walk.
Activity 1: Freeze Dance
10 MINS
Play music. When it stops, students must freeze instantly. Key Reflection: "How hard was it to stop your feet immediately?" This is the Stop Button in action.
Activity 2: Simon Says
10 MINS
Play a standard round. Emphasize the Wait Button . We only move when we hear the code words. If we move early, our impulse beat our control.
Activity 3: Patience Puzzle
10 MINS
Groups solve a simple puzzle. The rule: No one can touch a piece until the group agrees where it goes. This practices Team Patience .
Reflection & Wrap-Up
10 MINS
Distribute the reflection worksheet. Discuss: "When will you need your Stop Button today?" (Hallway, lunch, waiting for a turn).
Teacher Pro-Tip
Watch for students who struggle during the games. Instead of "getting them out," use it as a learning moment: "Oh, your motor was still running! Let's try to find the brake next time." Focus on progress, not perfection.
