WHY NOT DISTRACTING OTHERS MATTERS
- One side-whisper breaks concentration for up to 5 nearby peers.

WEEKS 1 & 2 • IDENTIFYING TRIGGERS & THE RIPPLE EFFECT
Mentor & Mentee Guide
1
Week 1: The Distraction Radar (Spotting the Triggers)
Session Goal: Name Personal Triggers
Mentor Check-In Prompt: "Think about your classes this week. What was happening right before you lost focus or felt tempted to talk?"
🧠 Internal Triggers (Inside You):
Boredom, hunger, tiredness, daydreaming about after-school plans, zoning out when work feels confusing.
👀 External Triggers (Around You):
Friends whispering, funny hallway noise, tapping pencils, someone waving, tech notifications.
Mentee Reflection: My Two Biggest Distraction "Sparks" in Class:
Spark 1 (What triggers me most):
Spark 2 (Where/When it happens most):
Week 1 Action Mission: Put your "Distraction Radar" on. Catch the exact second you drift off and silently say: "Aha, caught it!"
Target Class:
2
Week 2: The Ripple Effect (Distraction is Contagious)
Session Goal: Classroom Empathy
Mentor Check-In Prompt: "Have you ever been trying really hard to study or listen and someone next to you wouldn't stop whispering or tapping? How did it feel?"
Level 1: Me
I miss the step-by-step instructions and get stuck later.
Level 2: My Neighbors
My tablemates lose train of thought; their concentration breaks.
Level 3: The Class
Teacher pauses lesson; entire class loses learning momentum.
Mentee Commitment: One way I will protect my classmates' focus this week:
Strategy of the Week: "The 3-Foot Bubble" Treat your desk area as a quiet workspace where nothing distracting enters or leaves.

Week 3: The Focus Toolkit (Body & Desk Setup)
Session Goal: Physical Focus Routines
Mentor Check-In Prompt: "What does your desk and posture look like right before you lose focus? Let's build physical habits that keep you locked in."
The Clean Launchpad
Only notebook & pen on desk. Backpack zipped shut and under desk—zero visual clutter.
Speaker Camera Tracking
Track the speaker with eyes and head like a camera. If teacher moves, your gaze follows smoothly.
Silent Physical Anchor
Press feet flat on floor or gently grip pencil tip down when restless rather than clicking or tapping.
Mentee Selection: Which tool will you test this week, and in which class?
Chosen Tool:
When / Which Period:
Mentor Tip: Remind mentee that body posture tells the brain whether it's time to sleep or time to work!

Week 4: The 5-Second Pause (Resisting Peer Distractions)
Session Goal: Saying No Without Conflict
Mentor Check-In Prompt: "What do you do when a friend whispers to you, makes faces, or tries to get your attention during silent work or teacher talk?"
1. The Silent Point
Hold up one finger ("1 sec") and gently point back down at your paper without smiling or answering.
2. The Recess Pivot
Whisper softly once: "Hold that thought—tell me right at the bell/lunch!" then instantly turn back.
3. The Shoulder Angle
Turn your shoulders slightly away from the talker toward the front board to signal focus physically.
Mentee Practice: Write your exact go-to sentence or signal to use when a friend tries to talk:
Roleplay Exercise: Mentor acted as the distracting classmate; Mentee practiced their deflect.

Week 5: The Quick Reset (Bouncing Back Without Shame)
Session Goal: Fast Self-Correction
Mentor Check-In Prompt: "Everyone loses focus sometimes—even teachers! What do you usually do when you realize you missed 5 minutes of class? Give up, or reset?"
Step 1: Catch It Calmly
No self-shaming. Just notice: "My mind slipped. That's okay, coming back now."
Step 2: One Deep Breath
Take 1 quiet deep breath, roll your shoulders down, and plant both feet firmly on the floor.
Step 3: Re-Entry Question
Look at board or ask neighbor quietly: "Which page/question are we on?" to rejoin immediately.
Mentee Plan: My personal reset signal when I notice I've drifted off in class:
Golden Rule: Losing focus is natural. How fast you recover is what makes you a champion!

Mentor Quick-Reference: Effective Coaching Habits
💬 Powerful Question Starters:
- "Walk me through what happened right before you got distracted."
- "What made that moment feel tempting to talk or zone out?"
- "Which tool felt most natural for you to try?"
🌟 Meaningful Praise Formula:
- Praise effort & strategy rather than just perfection:
- "I love that you caught yourself and reset in 30 seconds."
- "Using your body language to deflect was a mature move."
If Your Mentee Had a Rough Week: Don't lecture or act disappointed. Say: "That's completely normal. Even adults have rough weeks. Let's look at what triggered it and pick one small adjustment for Monday."
