Big Feeling Check
What is Frustration?
Everyone feels it! 💛
🧩
When Work is Tricky
Like building a tall tower that keeps tumbling down, or writing a tricky letter.
⏳
Waiting Your Turn
When you really want the red crayon or the swing right now, but have to wait.
🌧️
When Plans Change
When rain cancels outdoor recess or games do not go the way you hoped.
Remember: Frustration is NOT bad. It just means your brain is learning!

Brave Words & Reset
You Are Never Alone! 🤝
🗣️
Tool #3
Brave Asking Words
It is brave to ask when things are tricky! Say:
“I feel stuck. Can you help me?” Teachers, helpers, and classmates are here to help you.
Practice saying: “I can try with help!”
🌱
Tool #4
The Magic Word: YET!
When something feels impossible, add the word YET:
“I don’t know how to tie shoes yet.”
“I haven’t built this puzzle yet.”

SEL Competencies
Self-Awareness & Self-Management
Target Objective
Name 2 body clues & apply 1 calm tool
Materials Needed
Lesson Slides, Worksheets, Crayons
Step-by-Step Lesson Protocol
1
Hook: The Shaken Soda Bottle (4 min) Slides 1–2
Hold up a clear bottle filled with water and glitter (or sealed soda). Shake gently: “When things are tricky, our inside feels fizzy and bubbly! That is called frustration. It is totally normal.”
2
Body Clue Detectives (5 min) Slide 3
Have students touch their cheeks (hot?), make fists (tight?), feel chest (fast heart?). Guide them to notice feelings in their bodies before big reactions erupt.
3
Interactive Modeling & Practice (8 min) Slides 4–5
Lead the whole group through Balloon Belly Breathing (3 counts in, 3 counts out) and the Starfish 5-Count. Chorally repeat the brave phrase: “I don't get this YET. Can you help me, please?”
4
Independent Reflection & Worksheet (8 min) Slide 6 + Worksheet
Distribute the Cool Down Crew Activity Sheet. Students circle their personal body clues, choose their go-to calm tool, and draw themselves using their calm superpower.
Kindergarten Responsive Scripts (Keep These Handy!)
When a student shows frustration: “I notice your fists are tight. Is your body feeling fizzy? Let's take one balloon breath together.”
When a student says "I can't do it!": “You can't do it YET! What is one tiny step we can try together?”
Calm Corner Connection
- Post Slide 6 or the worksheet as a visual visual choice board.
- Keep sensory tools handy: soft squeeze ball, pinwheel for breathing.
- Use a 2-minute sand timer so students return to class activities smoothly.
Differentiation & Support
- ELL / Non-Verbal: Provide visual emotion cards with thumbs-up/down.
- High Dysregulation: Co-regulate first; do belly breaths side-by-side.
- Extension: Have student pairs roleplay asking a peer for help.
