1
Warm-Up: The Frustration Thermometer (5 Mins)
Grounding & Norms
Invite students into a seated circle. Pass the soft ball around. Have each student share their current "Frustration Temp" (1 = cool cucumber, 5 = ready to pop) when something went wrong today or this week.
Facilitator Script: "In this circle, mistakes aren't emergencies. They are clues. When something doesn't go right, our bodies might feel hot or tight. Today, we're unlocking the secret of the 'Best Mistake'!"
2
Brain Science: Why Mistakes Are Brain Sparks (8 Mins)
Psychoeducation
Show Slide 4 ("The Brain Spark Secret"). Explain neuroplasticity in 3rd-grade terms: when we get everything right easily, our brain cruises on autopilot. When we make a mistake and try again, brain fibers (synapses) fire like fireworks.
The Sticky Invention Fact: Post-it notes were created by accident when an engineer tried to make ultra-strong glue and failed!
Key Question to Ask: "What is something you can do now that was really tough when you first tried it in kindergarten?"
3
The 3-Step "Oops Flip" Formula (7 Mins)
Skill Modeling
Teach students the kinesthetic memory trigger to halt runaway frustration before kicking or tearing paper:
1. CATCH IT Hand on chest: "I feel mad/annoyed right now."
2. CALM IT Shoulder shrug + deep belly exhale.
3. FLIP IT Say: "What is this mistake teaching me?"

Part 2: Active Movement Game & Debrief
Active Game: 12-15 Mins
Game: "The Oops Relay & Brain Reset"
High Energy Movement
Students need a physical outlet to release the tension of frustration. This game blends kinesthetic discharge with verbal cognitive reframing.
Setup: Place the "Glitch Cards" at Station A (Start) and the "Brain Spark Reframe Cards" at Station B (Across the room).
Round 1: Player 1 draws a Glitch Card (e.g., "I ripped my math paper!" ). They act out a frozen "Frustrated Statue" for 3 seconds.
Movement: Group yells "SHAKE IT OFF!" Player performs the card's movement (e.g., 5 Frog Hops or a Bear Crawl) across to Station B.
The Flip: Player grabs the Growth Reframe ("Tape fixes paper, and my brain is learning!" ) and shouts it. Whole group repeats in unison with a Power Pose!
Phase 5: "My Best Mistake" Lab Sheet (8 Mins)
Self-Application
Distribute the Best Mistake Lab Worksheet . Guide students to think of a real mistake from school, sports, or home that helped them become smarter or stronger.
Prompt: "Who can share a mistake that felt awful at first, but now you're glad happened?" Counselor shares their own funny/real mistake first to model safety!
De-Escalation Cheat Sheet for Group Meltdowns
Avoid Saying:
"It's not a big deal, calm down."
"You're overreacting."
"Just erase it and move on."
Try Saying Instead:
"I see your brain working super hard right now."
"Your body is feeling that frustration spike. Let's exhale."
"That was an awesome oops! What did it show us?"
Quick Progress Check
Level 1: Identifies physical signs of frustration
Level 2: Participates in verbal reframing during game
Level 3: Independently names a personal 'Best Mistake'
