Sequence Roadmap & Learning Progression
L# Lesson Focus Core Competency & Student Target Key Anchor Phrase
1 Tease or Trouble Distinguish fun playful banter from hurtful behavior. "If we aren't both laughing, stop!"
2 Bullying Clues Detect 3 clues: Repeated, On Purpose, Unfair power. "Notice the 3 Bullying Clues."
3 Heart Glasses Develop perspective-taking and identify emotional pain. "See through their heart eyes."
4 Bystander vs Upstander Recognize the silent crowd vs active courageous helper. "I will not just stand and watch."
5 Strong Voice Use calm posture, steady eye contact, and clear limits. "Stop, that is unkind and not okay."
6 Welcome Circle Inclusion strategies: invite to sit, play, and link arms. "Hey! Come sit and play with us!"
7 Telling Not Tattling Tattling is getting into trouble; telling keeps people safe. "Telling keeps everyone safe."
8 Distract and Defuse Shift focus safely: invite target away, create silly diversion. "Quick switch! Let's check this out!"
9 Rehearsal Rounds Apply the 4 Upstander Moves across real school settings. "Choose your Upstander Move!"
10 Squad Promise Pledge, community agreement, badge ceremony, and celebration. "We are an Upstander Classroom!"
The 4 Core Upstander Moves (Teach All 10 Lessons)
1. SPEAK UP Calm, clear words to halt hurtful behavior
2. REACH OUT Stand next to target, invite them into play
3. SWITCH IT Distract and walk away together to safety
4. GET AN ADULT Report immediately when unsafe or repeating
TEACHER SCRIPTS & SAFE RESPONSE PROTOCOLS
Classroom Management, Emotional Safety & Inclusive Facilitation
Facilitator Tool Quick Reference
Script: When a Student Reports Real Hurt in Class
Teacher response: "Thank you for trusting our squad and speaking courageously. In this room, everyone has the right to feel safe and respected. I hear you, I take this seriously, and you and I will talk right after this circle so we can fix this safely."
Script: Teasing vs Bullying Coaching Prompt
Teacher prompt: "Look at both faces. Is everyone smiling, or is one person looking down, feeling small, or shrinking? If only one person is laughing, the fun stops right now."
Upstander Safety Rule #1: Never Fight Back
Crucial rule for 2nd graders: Upstanders do not push, yell insults, or get into physical conflict. If an older kid or physical danger is involved, the bravest upstander action is immediately walking away to grab a recess monitor or teacher.
Tiered Differentiation & Accessibility Strategies
Shy or Quiet Students
Emphasize Move #2 (Reach Out) or Move #4 (Get Adult). Quiet upstanders can silently stand beside a friend or hand them a toy without having to speak loudly.
Emerging Readers / ELL
Pair each phrase with hand gestures (hand up for "STOP", hands open for "COME PLAY"). Provide illustrated prompt cards for visual recognition.
Fast Finishers / Leaders
Assign as "Recess Welcome Captains" who actively seek out students sitting alone on the buddy bench and invite them into games.
2nd Grade Mastery Checklist
Student can state the difference between friendly teasing and hurtful words.
Student identifies at least 2 safe trusted adults in the school building.
Student demonstrates speaking up with assertive body posture and calm voice.
Student practices inviting an excluded peer to play or sit together.
Tease Trouble Slides Lesson 1 • SEL Upstander Squad
20-Minute Focus
Tease or Trouble?
How Words Really Feel
Sometimes joking is fun for everyone. But sometimes words sting. How can an Upstander spot the difference?
😄
Friendly Play
Both people laugh and feel happy inside.
😢
Hurtful Trouble
Only one laughs; the other feels small or sad.
Look for the 3 Clues
Face • Feelings • Stopping
👀
1. Look at Faces
Are both people smiling with their eyes? Or does one look away, bite their lip, or freeze?
Check expressions!
🛑
2. Does It Stop?
When someone says "Stop" or looks unhappy, does the joke instantly quit? Friendly teasing halts!
Respect the stop!
💔
3. Heart Check
Does the joke target clothes, family, hair, or mistakes? If it pokes at someone's heart, it is trouble.
Protect hearts!
Rule of Thumb: If we aren't BOTH laughing, the joke is DONE!

Bullying Decoded:
The 3 Big Clues
Not every argument is bullying. Bullying has 3 special clues that Upstanders need to spot!
🎯
1. On Purpose
Not an accident
🔄
2. Again & Again
Repeated over time
⚖️
3. Unfair Power
Hard for one person to stop
How to Spot Each Clue
Evidence Checklist
🎯
On Purpose
It wasn't a bump in line or a slipped ball. Someone meant to hurt feelings or bodies.
"I wanted to make you feel bad."
🔄
Repeated
It doesn't happen just once on a bad day. It happens yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
"Happens again and again."
⚖️
Unfair Power
One kid is older, bigger, or has a crowd of friends, making it hard for the other to defend themselves.
"The sides are not equal."
Conflict is equal arguing. Bullying has all 3 clues!

Empathy Power
Put On Your
Heart Glasses
Empathy means seeing the world through someone else's eyes and caring about how they feel inside their heart.
👓
What Do Heart Glasses Do?
They help us see feelings that might be invisible on the outside.
Outside Face vs. Inside Heart
Hidden Feelings
😐
On The Outside:
A classmate might look quiet, stare at the floor, pretend not to care, or shrug their shoulders.
"It's easy to miss if you don't look closely."
💔
Inside The Heart:
They might feel lonely, embarrassed, scared to come to school, or wonder: "Does anyone want to be my friend?"
"Heart Glasses see the hurt."
When we notice someone feeling left out, that is our cue to step in!

The Shift
Bystander or Upstander?
You Have The Power to Choose
When something unfair happens, everyone watching has a choice. What is the difference between standing by and standing up?
🚶
A Bystander
Watches silently, laughs along, or walks away.
🦸
An Upstander
Uses words, kindness, or adult help to protect others.
What Happens When We Do Nothing?
The Power of the Crowd
😶
When Everyone Stays Silent:
The person being mean thinks: "Everyone agrees with me!"
The person being hurt thinks: "Nobody cares about me."
Silence makes the bullying bigger.
🌟
When One Person Steps In:
More than half the time, bullying stops in less than 10 seconds when a peer speaks up or walks with the target!
One upstander gives courage to all.
You don't need to be loud or angry to be an Upstander—just caring!
