Grades K • Counseling Routine

3 Phase 3: The "Finger Clue" Detective Game (Slide 7 • 6 Min) Interactive Whole-Group

Teach students the hand signal: 1 finger = Small, 2 fingers = Medium, 3 fingers = Big. Read each scenario and have students lock their clue in their brain, then flash fingers on count: “1, 2, 3... Flash your clue!”

Scenario A: Dropped Snack

Your cracker breaks into pieces on your plate.

→ 1 Finger (Small)

Scenario B: Swings Taken

A friend ran ahead and took your favorite swing.

→ 2 Fingers (Medium)

Scenario C: Playground Fall

A classmate falls from monkey bars and cries out.

→ 3 Fingers (Big)

4 Phase 4: Detective Coloring Sheet Implementation (7 Min) Student Application

Transition students to desks. Distribute the Problem Size Coloring Sheet and crayons.

Color Small: Green Color the magnifying glass and draw 1 calm breath face in the badge.

Color Medium: Yellow Color the sharing blocks and circle the word “TALK” or a friend icon.

Color Big: Red Color the emergency beacon and draw the teacher helper hand.

Circulating Prompt: “Detective [Name], tell me about your small problem picture. What superpower habit will you use if that happens?”

Differentiation & Accommodations

Visual & Non-Verbal Use color cards (Green / Yellow / Red) on student desks or desks for non-verbal pointing during conflicts.

Sensory / Dysregulated Pair Habit 3 with physical motor grounding: 3 hand-presses or blowing imaginary soup bubbles before deciding problem size.

Advanced / Early Finishers Prompt students to dictate or write 1 sentence describing how they proactively solved a small problem this week.

Counselor Pro-Tips: Navigating Kindergarten Misconceptions

  • • All problems feel BIG to 5-year-olds: Validate their emotion (“It feels frustrating!”) while helping them categorize the situational reality (“Can a paper towel fix this? Yes, that means it’s a small problem!”).
  • • Tattling vs. Reporting Clue: Remind students: “Reporting is for Big Problems to keep people safe. Tattling is telling to get someone in trouble for a Small Problem.”
