The 3-Step Wait Protocol
What to do before calling out or interrupting
Step 1: Check In
Look around. Is the staff member helping another student, on an urgent call, or speaking to a visitor?
Rule: Wait until they make eye contact.
Step 2: Silent Cue
Give your classroom silent signal (e.g., quiet raised hand, help cup, or sign on your desk).
Rule: Keep body still and mouth quiet.
Step 3: Switch Mode
Don't just stare! Pick a coping tool or solo waiting game right away to keep your brain happily engaged.
Rule: Patience is active, not boring!

Pocket Coping Tools for Quick Calming
5-Finger Trace Breathing
Hold one hand open. Trace up your thumb as you breathe in (count of 3), pause at the tip, then trace down as you exhale. Repeat across all five fingers.
Grounding 3-2-1 Sensory Scan
Silently spot around the room: 3 blue or green objects, 2 geometric shapes (circle, triangle), and listen for 1 quiet background sound.
Desk Muscle Release
Gently clench your toes and fists for 5 seconds while resting hands on your desk. Release suddenly and feel your shoulders drop and relax completely.
Positive Silent Self-Talk
Silently whisper in your head: "The staff member hasn't forgotten me. I can handle waiting. Good things take a few minutes."

Classroom Scenario Challenge
SCENARIO 1 The Stuck Problem
You are confused on question #4. You raise your hand, but your teacher is at another student's desk explaining a difficult concept. They give you a quick "1 minute" finger wave.
What can you do on your paper or at your desk while you wait patiently?
SCENARIO 2 The Urgent Feeling
You finished your project and feel bursting with excitement to show the staff assistant. The assistant is helping another classmate clean up spilled art supplies.
Which coping skill will you use to control your body, and what silent activity can you start?
Golden Rule: Waiting is not doing "nothing"—it is choosing self-control!
