Autumn Body Clues
Discovering your "inner weather" and tuning into your body's hidden signals.
Focus: Body Signals & Self-Awareness
What is Interoception?
You know your five outer senses (sight, smell, touch, taste, hearing). But you also have an internal sense called interoception. It monitors sensations inside your body—like your heartbeat, breath, stomach cues, muscle tension, and body temperature. Just as autumn weather shifts from sunny warmth to brisk chills, your internal state has its own "inner weather" that tells you what you need to feel balanced.
1 The Autumn Body Signal Map
Review the 5 major internal stations below
Head & Jaw
Clenched teeth, throbbing temples, heavy eyelids, or clear and sharp.
Signal: Focus / Stress
Lungs & Throat
Fast shallow panting, tight lump in throat, or deep slow belly breaths.
Signal: Calm / Alarm
Heart & Chest
Fluttering like leaves in wind, pounding drum, or calm rhythmic pulse.
Signal: Excitement / Fear
Stomach & Gut
Twisting butterflies, hollow hunger rumblings, nausea, or warm & full.
Signal: Energy / Anxiety
Skin & Temp
Flushed cheeks, clammy hands, shivers/goosebumps, or cozy warmth.
Signal: Regulation / Heat
2 My Current "Inner Weather" Scan
Pause for 30 seconds, close your eyes, and listen inwardly
A. Body Thermometer
Check hands, feet, and face. Circle your current reading:
Chilly / Cold Cozy / Just Right Warm / Flushed
Describe what you physically notice:
B. Autumn Wind (Breath)
Place a hand on your ribs. How is breath moving right now?
Quick & High Smooth & Steady Heavy / Holding
Where in your body do you feel it?
C. Fuel & Battery Tank
Notice stomach and muscles. What is your charge level?
Empty / Low Balanced / Steady Restless / Wired
What is your energy or stomach asking for?
Synthesizing Your Inner Weather Metaphor
If your internal body sensations were an autumn forecast right now (e.g., crisp sunny morning, gusty gale blowing leaves everywhere, damp quiet fog, early morning frost), what would your weather report be, and why?

Interoceptive sensations are clues. Read each scenario, identify the hidden body signals, and deduce what the nervous system needs.
3 Case Studies: What Is the Body Saying?
Case A The Cold-Morning Science Presentation
Signal Decoding
Marcus stands up to present his project. His palms feel slick and icy cold, his chest is thumping rapidly like a woodpecker, and his throat feels dry and tight.
1. What internal signals is his body sending?
2. What action helps reset his nervous system?
Case B The Crowded Fall Pep Rally
Sensory Overload
Inside the noisy gym during the spirit assembly, Maya feels her jaw clenching tight, a dull band of pressure wrapping around her forehead, and a fluttery churn in her stomach.
1. What physical state or need is her body signaling?
2. What proactive step can Maya take right now?
Case C Post-Lunch Autumn Slump
Energy & Fatigue
In 6th period as the afternoon sun slants through the window, Leo feels his shoulders slump, his head feels foggy like autumn mist, and he snaps irritably when his partner asks to borrow a pencil.
1. Is Leo "just mad," or is his body signaling fatigue/dehydration?
2. How does recognizing this clue change how he reacts?
4 My Autumn Regulation Recipe
Create your personalized sensory toolkit
Temperature & Sip
e.g., Holding a warm mug of cider/tea, splashing cool water on wrists, breathing crisp air.
My Strategy:
Muscle & Pressure
e.g., Wearing a heavy cozy hoodie, slow shoulder rolls, walking on crunchy leaves, desk push-ups.
My Strategy:
Breath & Space
e.g., 4-count autumn leaf breath (inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4), stepping into quiet space, gazing outside.
My Strategy:
The Takeaway: Why Listen Before the Storm Hits?
Why is noticing a subtle body clue (like a tight jaw or shallow breath) much more helpful than waiting until you reach a meltdown or angry outburst?
