Self-Regulation Step 1
The Body Alarm: Notice Body Sensations
Self-regulation starts with tuning into body sensations. Your body sounds an alarm before anger erupts!
Flushed Face
Cheeks feel burning hot as blood rushes upward.
Tight Muscles
Clenched fists, stiff shoulders, and tight jaw sensations.
Racing Pulse
A thumping heart and rapid, shallow breathing.
Stomach Knots
A churning or tight sensation in the pit of your stomach.
Self-Regulation Secret: When you notice body sensations early, simple coping strategies can cool the heat in seconds!
Self-Regulation Check
The Volcano Gauge: Measuring Body Sensations
Track body sensations across 3 heat zones to choose the right coping strategies.
Level 1 COOL / SPARK
Mild Body Sensations
Slightly annoyed, mild eye-roll, light tension. You are fully in self-regulation control.
Coping strategy: Deep sigh & self-talk ("I've got this.")
Level 2 WARMING / SIMMER
Strong Body Sensations
Hot face, clenched fists, fast heartbeat. Self-regulation requires immediate action.
Coping strategy: 5-Second Freeze Frame & Box Breathing!
Level 3 ERUPTION / RED ZONE
Overwhelming Sensations
Urge to yell, slam, or cry. Body sensations are overflowing; thinking brain goes offline.
Coping strategy: Physical space, silence, water, asking for help.
Our self-regulation goal: Spot body sensations at Level 1 or 2 so coping strategies work immediately!
Coping Strategy #1: The Ventilator
4x4 Box Breathing
A self-regulation breathing technique that resets intense internal body sensations.
1. Inhale (4s)
2. Hold (4s)
3. Exhale (4s)
4. Hold (4s)
1 Belly Breath Inhale
Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds, calming your chest sensations.
2 Gentle Hold
Hold the breath gently for 4 seconds to steady your racing pulse.
3 Slow Smooth Exhale
Exhale through parted lips for 4 seconds, releasing muscle tightness.
Let’s test this coping strategy together! Sit tall, feet flat on the floor.
Coping Strategy #2: The Circuit Breaker
The 5-Second Freeze Frame
Self-regulation means giving yourself a 5-second pause before words or actions spill out.
🛑
Lock It
Zippers on lips. Hands in pockets or under thighs so you avoid reacting aggressively.
5..1
Count Down
Count backwards mentally: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 . This re-engages the thinking brain and eases body sensations.
🧊
Drop Shoulders
Exhale hard and drop your shoulders down 2 inches. Feel tight body sensations melt away.
Self-Regulation Fact: Pausing for 5 seconds is a power move—it proves you are in control, not your body sensations!
Coping Strategy #3: Muscle & Mind Resets
Physical Release & Grounding
When adrenaline causes intense body sensations, use these coping strategies to release tension safely.
The Lemon Squeeze
Muscle Sensation Release
• Clench fists as hard as possible like squeezing juice out of lemons.
• Tighten your arms and notice the strong body sensations for 5 seconds .
• Drop the lemons! Feel the soothing sensation of muscles softening.
The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounder
Sensory Self-Regulation
5 Things you can see in the room
4 Things you can feel with your hands
3 Sounds your ears can detect
2 Scents you can smell
1 Calming sentence you say in your mind
Both coping strategies shift your body sensations from panic mode to calm self-regulation.

Teacher Talk Script: Body Sensations & Self-Regulation
"Class, anger is not a bad feeling. It is a biological alarm that creates real body sensations—a pounding heartbeat, hot cheeks, or tight hands. Self-regulation means noticing those body sensations before they boil over. Once you spot them on your volcano gauge, you can reach into your toolkit and use coping strategies like box breathing and muscle resets to stay in control."

Teacher Facilitation Protocol: Coaching Coping Strategies
Coping Strategy #1: Box Breathing
"Feet flat, hands on belly. Notice your body sensations right now. As you breathe in for 4, expand your belly like a balloon. Hold gently for 4... exhale smoothly for 4 to release tension. Hold empty for 4. This directly slows your racing heart sensation."
