Pause Power Slides Brain Brakes Session 1 • Self-Regulation
SKILL 01
Hitting the Pause
Mastering the 3-second brake between an impulse spark and your reaction.
Stop & Think Protocol Brain Brakes Academy
What Is an Impulse?
Concept
The Spark (Impulse)
A sudden, lightning-fast urge to act or speak before your thinking brain steps in.
Examples:
Blurting an answer out loud
Snatching a marker first
Shoving when frustrated
The Brain Brake
The physical habit of pressing pause for three quiet seconds so you stay in control.
Why it works:
Cool down brain urgency
Switch to smart thinking
Protect yourself & others
Key Truth: Urges happen automatically, but actions are always your choice.
The Method
The 3-Second Brain Brake
01
FREEZE
Lock hands and feet in place. Do not move or speak for one count.
Body completely still
02
BREATHE
Take one slow nose breath in, then exhale softly through your lips.
Exhale drops heart rate
03
DECIDE
Ask your brain: "Will my next move help or hurt this situation?"
Choose thoughtful response
Total time elapsed: Just 3 seconds. Impact: Saves your whole day.
Speed Trap Drill
Whole Class Practice
CHALLENGE 1
The Fast Question
The teacher asks: "What is 8 times 7?" Every fiber in you wants to yell the answer immediately!
Brain Brake Action: Freeze mouth shut, inhale 1 count, raise silent hand.
CHALLENGE 2
The Bump in the Hallway
Someone accidentally bumps your backpack and your notebook drops. Your fists clench up fast.
Brain Brake Action: Open fists flat, breathe out, speak calmly.
Rule: Spot the spark before the spark becomes a flame. Freeze • Breathe • Decide

The 3-Second Brain Brake Rule: When an impulse sparks: 1. Freeze your body → 2. Breathe slow & deep → 3. Decide your next move.
1 My Body's Urgency Warning Signs
Check the physical warning signs your body sends right before you act impulsively:
Face feels warm/hot Tight or clenched fists Racing heart rate Bouncing feet or legs Urge to shout or blurt Tension in shoulders
2 Scenario Brake Lab: Pause & Respond
Read each situation below. Describe the quick impulse urge versus the thoughtful 3-second Brain Brake response.
Case A During quiet work time, someone at your table accidentally knocks over your pencil holder and whispers a laugh.
Sudden Impulse Urge (Before Thinking):
3-Second Brain Brake Action (Freeze → Breathe → Decide):
Case B You are playing a game at recess. A classmate makes a rule call you strongly disagree with, and your turn gets skipped.

Key Verbal Prompts & Teacher Scripts
When you spot an impulse forming in the room:
"Hold the wheel! Everyone hit the 3-second Brain Brake together: Freeze hands and feet (1)... slow deep breath (2)... what's our smart next move? (3)."
When a student is revving into Yellow/Red zone:
"I see your engine is in the Yellow zone right now. Let's do a 20-second pit stop and run your favorite cooling tool before we decide what to do."
When guiding a restorative reflection after a conflict:
"Let's play the Fast-Forward tape back. Where did the spark start? If we rewind 10 seconds, what safe filter could we put in place next time?"
Differentiation & Classroom Adaptation
Students with ADHD / High Impulsivity
Place a visual "Pause Button" sticker on their desk. Pre-teach a discreet physical anchor (e.g. thumb-to-finger press) they can touch before blurting or transitioning.
Multilingual & Visual Learners
Pair the verbal steps with color-coded hand gestures (Fist = Freeze, Open Palm = Breathe, Pointer Finger = Decide). Use the slide visuals as an anchor poster.
Quick Formative Assessment Criteria
Emerging
Acts before pause; needs verbal adult prompt to freeze body.
Developing
Catches urge with visual cue; uses cooling tool with peer or adult support.
Mastery
Independently pauses 3 seconds; selects safe, respectful alternative response.
Brain Brakes Facilitation Protocol Empowering self-regulation through consistent routines and predictable cues.

SKILL 02
Cooling the Engine
Spotting your emotional warning lights and cooling down big feelings before you overheat.
Body Temperature & Heart Rate Awareness Brain Brakes Academy
The Emotional Engine Zones
Check Your RPM
Cruising Zone
Green RPM
Calm, focused, ready to listen and learn. Your brain engine runs smooth.
Body: Relaxed muscles, steady breathing.
Revving Zone
Yellow RPM
Frustrated, anxious, or hyper. Engine heat is climbing fast!
Body: Clenched teeth, shallow breath, heat rising.
Overheating
Redline RPM
Rage, panic, or total overload. The thinking brain shuts down completely.
Body: Blurring vision, shouting, explosive urge.
Goal: Catch yourself in the Yellow Zone and use cooling tools before you redline!
Your Portable Cooling Toolkit
Action Menu
Box Breathing
Inhale 4 sec → Hold 4 sec → Exhale 4 sec → Hold 4 sec.

Engine Check & Calming Menu
Name: __________________________
Date: ____________ Period: _____
Engine Rule: Never make a decision when your engine is in the Red Zone . Cool down to Yellow or Green first!
1 Diagnosing My Emotional Engine
Read each zone description, then list your most common triggers that push your engine there:
Green (Cruising) Calm & Ready
What makes you feel calm, steady, and focused at school?
Yellow (Revving) Tension Rising
What triggers frustration, impatience, or worry for you?
Red (Overheating) Emergency Stop
What pushes you into intense anger, tears, or panic?
2 My Custom Cool-Down Menu
Choose and write down your 3 top go-to cooling tools you can realistically use anywhere at school:
Tool 1: Breathing Reset
Describe your breathing technique (e.g. 4x4 box, 3 deep sighs):
Tool 2: Physical / Sensory
Describe your sensory grounding move (e.g. 5-4-3-2-1, shoulder roll):
Tool 3: Calming Self-Talk
What can you quietly tell yourself (e.g. "I can handle this calmly")?
3 High-Heat Case Study: Putting the Tool to Work
Scenario: You studied hard for a math test, but the teacher announces you made a careless error on a problem you thought you got right. Your face turns red, your ears get hot, and you want to tear up the paper or slam your pencil.
What RPM zone are you in right now? What bodily clue proves it?
Which cooling tool will you use, and what is your safe next move?

Consequence Forecasting Brain Brakes Academy
The Fast-Forward Filmstrip
Strategy
10s
In 10 Seconds...
How will the other person react immediately? Does someone get hurt or embarrassed?
Immediate reaction check
10m
In 10 Minutes...
Will I be explaining myself to an adult? Will I lose privileges or trust?
Consequence check
10d
In 10 Days...
Will I feel proud of how I handled this, or will I wish I could hit rewind?
Self-respect check
Fast-forwarding takes just 2 seconds of brain time, but saves days of regret.
The 3-Question Safety Filter
Decision Check
1. Is it SAFE?
Does this action keep my body and others' bodies free from harm?
2. Is it RESPECTFUL?
Does this protect dignity, feelings, and property?
3. Does it SOLVE the problem?
Or does it just make the mess twice as big?
If an action fails even ONE filter, hit the brakes and pick a different road.
The Fork in the Road
Scenario Showdown
The Spark: Someone calls you a teasing nickname in line for cafeteria lunch.
