Swamp Guide Therapist Pack Clinical Intervention Guide
Swamp Sanity
Session Code: SW-ANG
Clinical Rationale & Theme Integration
Anger is rarely a standalone emotional state; it is a defensive reaction covering deeper vulnerability. By leveraging the familiar narrative of Shrek, this clinical protocol lowers client resistance, fosters objective self-distancing, and provides concrete imagery for complex intrapsychic processes (e.g., masking, somatic suppression, primary vs. secondary emotions).
Core Intervention Pillars
The Onion Model (Shrek)
Target: Primary Emotion Discovery.
Peeling back defensive secondary anger to address vulnerability, loneliness, and fear of rejection.
Emotional Masking (Fiona)
Target: Internal/External Pressure.
Deconstructing the exhausting effort to mask underlying distress to please societal expectations.
Verbal Processing (Donkey)
Target: Impulsive Outbursts.
Shifting from somatic freeze/explode cycles to proactive, expressive verbal communication.
Rigid Control (Farquaad)
Target: Cognitive Inflexibility.
Examining how rigid demands for absolute control directly precipitate explosive, externalized tantrums.

Session Script & Discussion Prompts
Use these verbatim prompts and guidequestions to assist the client in exploring emotional regulation. Adjust depth according to individual capacity.
Section A: Peeling the Onion (Shrek)
"Shrek famously said that ogres are like onions—they have layers. When we feel angry, that's often just the tough, prickly outer layer. Underneath are layers of other emotions. What's a recent time you roared like an ogre? If we peeled that roar back, what hidden feelings (fear, loneliness, sadness) might we find inside?"
Clinical Goal: Move client from secondary reactiveness to primary emotional awareness. Key Prompt: "What is the anger trying to protect you from feeling?"
Section B: The Princess Mask (Fiona)
"Princess Fiona lived a double life. By day, she put on the perfect, polished princess mask. By night, she became her true ogre self. Many of us put on masks—pretending everything is 'fine' while holding massive stress inside. Where do you feel the pressure to wear a 'perfect mask'? What happens when that pressure builds up too long?"
Clinical Goal: Connect chronic masking/suppression with eventual explosive anger outbursts. Key Prompt: "Who is the safest person for you to take your mask off around?"
Section C: Verbal Processing (Donkey)
"Donkey doesn't bottle anything up. He talks through his fears, joys, and anxieties out loud. Shrek, on the other hand, isolates and grunts. When you get overwhelmed, are you more of a silent, isolated Shrek, or do you have trouble putting your actual needs into words? How can we talk about hard feelings without roaring?"
Clinical Goal: Transition from behavioral acting-out to safe, verbal cognitive processing. Key Prompt: "What is one sentence that directly states what you need right now?"
Section D: Rigid Demands (Farquaad)
"Lord Farquaad demanded a perfect kingdom. If anything went slightly off-plan, he threw tantrums or locked others away. When we demand absolute control over people or situations, we set ourselves up for explosive anger. Where in your life are you acting like Lord Farquaad—demanding that things be exactly your way?"
Clinical Goal: Target "must" and "should" cognitive distortions that fuel rage. Key Prompt: "How can we practice accepting things that are out of your control?"

De-escalation Toolkit
Swamp Grounding (5-4-3-2-1)
Help the client anchor somatic symptoms of rage by focusing on the immediate swamp surroundings:
5 things you can see (the rustic signs, trees)
4 things you can physically feel (feet on floor)
3 things you can hear (wind, distant sounds)
2 things you can smell (damp earth, air)
1 thing you can taste (fresh water)
Dragon's Breath Regulation
Deep breathing to reset the autonomic nervous system during acute "ogre roar" triggers:
Inhale (4s): Fill lungs, expanding belly like a giant sleeping dragon.
Hold (4s): Keep the oxygen still, cooling down internal fire.
Exhale (6s): Blow the warm air slowly out of the mouth, releasing muscle tension.
Repeat: Perform 4 cycles to drop heart rate.
Client Progression & Diagnosis Benchmarks
Archetype / Symptom Unregulated Response Regulated Target Shrek (Secondary Anger) Roaring, pushing others away, isolation, somatic defense. Verbalizing hurt, loneliness, or anxiety. Sharing vulnerabilities. Fiona (Masked Stress) Suppressing emotions to please others, sudden nighttime outbursts. Setting boundaries early, expressing authentic self throughout the day. Donkey (Verbal Overwhelm) Impulsive blabbing, talking over others, frantic defensive chatter. Calm assertion, pausing before responding, intentional active listening. Farquaad (Rigid Rules) Throwing tantrums when plans fail, demanding perfection from others. Flexible cognitive restructuring, accepting lack of control, radical acceptance.
Therapist Session Documentation Tip
When documenting this intervention (e.g., SOAP/DAP notes), reference: "Applied narrative therapeutic techniques using metaphoric framing ('Swamp Sanity Protocol') to identify cognitive rigidity, somatic defensive mechanisms, primary underlying vulnerabilities, and to establish active assertiveness strategies."

Scenario Cards
Cut out the cards below. Use during individual or group therapy sessions to explore the clinical scenarios. Instruct the client to identify the reactive behavior and formulate a healthy coping solution.
01 • THE ONION LAYER
The Swamp Squatters
Lord Farquaad dumps all the fairytale creatures onto your private swamp. You are furious, shouting at them to get out, and threatening to roar them away.
Therapist Prompt:
"Peel the anger back. What primary fear or hurt is Shrek actually feeling about his home?"
02 • THE PRINCESS MASK
The Royal Banquet
You feel completely overwhelmed trying to be the "perfect princess" during a fancy dinner with the King and Queen. You smile politely, but inside your head is pounding.
Therapist Prompt:
"How can you express your discomfort early before the nighttime 'ogre shift' takes over?"
03 • VERBAL EXPRESS
The Donkey Chitchat
A companion is talking non-stop, asking a million questions while you try to navigate a scary bridge. You feel the urge to push them away or yell "Shut up!"
Therapist Prompt:
"Instead of shouting or isolation, how can you state your boundary calmly using words?"
04 • RIGID CONTROL
The Imperfect Parade
You spent hours planning a perfect parade, but a strong gust of wind blows over the giant banners and everyone starts laughing. You feel a massive tantrum building.
Therapist Prompt:
"What 'must' or 'should' expectation caused this rage? How can you practice acceptance?"
05 • DRAGON'S LAIR
The Fiery Dragon
You are cornered by a giant fire-breathing dragon. Your physical body is in extreme fight-or-flight mode: heart racing, fists clenched, ready to explode.
Therapist Prompt:
"How can you use somatic grounding here to cool your internal thermostat before responding?"
06 • TRUE FORM
The True-Love Curse
Someone you really care about sees you in your messy, emotional "ogre form." You feel deeply embarrassed and want to instantly yell or push them away.
Therapist Prompt:
"What is the risk of showing vulnerability instead of anger here? How can you lean into love?"

The Onion Layer Model
Pillar 1: Shrek
"Ogres have layers. Onions have layers."
Anger is often a defensive **secondary emotion**. We use it like a prickly outer peel to protect our sensitive inner layers.
Key Reflection Question:
"What is your anger currently trying to protect you from feeling?"
Outer Layer (Prickly)
Secondary Anger & Roaring
Middle Layer (Soft)
Fear, Confusion, Sadness
Inner Core (Vulnerable)
Hurt, Rejection, Loneliness

Fiona's Double Life
Pillar 2: Fiona
The Exhaustion of Masking
Princess Fiona worked tirelessly to hide her ogre identity, wearing a perfect mask by day. Suppressing our real feelings and needs to please others creates huge internal pressure.
The Pressure Warning Sign:
When we "people-please" all day, we often explode in rage at night when we are exhausted.
Deconstruct the Mask:
🎭
Recognize the Stress
Notice when you say "I'm fine" but feel tense.
🗣️
Set Boundaries Early
Speak up before your energy is fully drained.
💚
Accept Your True Form
Give yourself permission to be tired or upset.

Donkey's Verbal Power
Pillar 3: Donkey
Ogrelike Silence (Shutting Down)
Isolating, grunting, and refusing to tell people what is wrong.
VS.
Donkey's Verbal Express (Processing)
Putting fear, anxiety, and frustration into words immediately.
Put Your Needs Into Words
Shutting down leads to inevitable roaring. Verbal processing is a relief valve that keeps your internal pressure low.
Use Donkey's Bridge Statement:
"I am feeling overwhelmed right now, and I just need a moment to think."

Activity 1: Peeling Back My Onion Layers
Anger is like an onion's tough, outer layer. When we get angry (roaring), we are often protecting softer emotions hidden deep inside ourselves. Use the prompts below to peel back your most recent angry outburst.
1. Think of a recent situation where you felt extremely angry. What happened on the surface? (Your outer "prickly" roar)
2. Underneath that anger, what other primary feelings were you holding? (Check all that apply, then elaborate in the box below)
Fear Loneliness Hurt Embarrassed
3. How could you communicate those primary, hidden feelings directly using words next time?

Activity 2: Fiona's Mask Reflection
Princess Fiona wore a polite princess mask during the day, keeping all her stress hidden. We do the same when we pretend we are okay when we are really struggling.
What does your "Polite Mask" say to other people to hide distress?
What is your "True Ogre Self" actually thinking and feeling behind the mask?
Activity 3: Exploding Farquaad's Demands
Lord Farquaad held rigid expectations for absolute perfection. When things didn't go his way, he exploded. We can practice "flexible acceptance" by rewriting our rigid rules.
Rigid Rule: "Everything must go exactly as I plan, or it is a disaster."
Rewrite with Flexibility (How can you accept imperfection?):
Rigid Rule: "People must behave exactly how I want them to behave."
Rewrite with Flexibility (How can you let go of trying to control others?):
