Facilitation Coaching Protocols
Teaching the "Watch, Try, Fly" Routine
The Behavioral Pattern We Are Shifting
When a task feels daunting, 2nd graders often proclaim "It's too hard!" and shut down. When the teacher crouches to demonstrate, the child frequently looks away, says "I can't do it anyway," or refuses the initial modeling step because watching feels vulnerable. Our goal is to make following the teacher feel like joining a cool pit crew, not a penalty.
Counselor & Teacher Scripting Toolbox
Step 1: "Eyes on My Pilot Hands" (Watch) Modeling Phase
"Your brain is in Captain Mode right now. You don't have to write yet! Just put your pencil down, turn your pilot eyes on my fingers, and count how many steps I take. Ready? Watch step one..."
Step 2: "Shadow My Move" (Try Together) Co-Pilot Phase
"Now pick up your pencil. We are going to do ONLY step one together. I draw a line, you draw a line. Boom! We are a two-person team. Look at that match!"
Step 3: "Solo Takeoff" (Fly) Independence Phase
"You just mastered step one with me! Now try step two solo. I will stay right beside you on the runway for ten seconds while you take off. Go for it!"
Teacher Collaboration & Generalization
Secret Hand Signal: Agree on a "Thumbs up / Goggles on" hand gesture that means "I'm coming over to show you step 1—get your pilot eyes ready."
Pencil Park Protocol: Teach student to place their pencil in the desk groove before the teacher speaks, removing the pressure of immediate execution.
Praise the Watch: Enthusiastically praise the act of watching the demonstration before praising the correct academic answer: "I love how your eyes tracked my marker!"

Three Flight Agreements
Together
1. Spot The Good
We notice what is fun, interesting, and exciting at school.
2. Pilot Eyes Ready
When a teacher shows a step, we park our pencil and watch closely.
3. Team Up To Try
We don't give up alone. We try step one together with our teacher.
Crew High-Five: "When things get tough, the Crew steps up!"
Our Secret Formula
How Champions Learn Hard Stuff
Watch • Try • Fly
Step 1 👀
WATCH
The teacher models it first.
Your job: Park your pencil and watch their hands.
"Show me your moves!"
Step 2 🤝
TRY TOGETHER
We do step one as a team.
Your job: Copy the exact first move together.
"We are co-pilots now!"
Step 3 🚀
FLY SOLO
Take off on your own!
Your job: Try the next step with confidence.
"Look at me fly!"
You NEVER have to know everything alone. We learn by watching first!
Brain Upgrade Moment
Flipping The "Too Hard" Trap
Power Shift
🛑 The Stuck Trap
"This is too hard. I'm not doing it. Don't show me."
What happens: You stay frustrated, and the brain doesn't get to grow.
