Why This Matters
Teaching conflict resolution builds empathy, improves peer relationships, and equips students with lifelong social-emotional skills in a fun, seasonal context.
Objective
Students will learn to recognize and name their feelings, practice respectful communication, and collaborate to resolve conflicts through winter-themed scenarios and a group pledge.
Teacher Preparation
Print and cut out Conflict Snowball Scenario Cards .
Print one Winter Feelings Snowflake Chart per student.
Print and laminate Respectful Communication Emoji Cards .
Display the Snowflake Peace Pledge Poster in front of the room.
Gather drawing paper, crayons, and a timer.

Gather students in a circle and introduce the winter theme: compare snowflakes to unique feelings.
Ask: "How does it feel if a snowflake melts?" to elicit emotions like sadness or frustration.
Briefly explain we’ll practice understanding feelings to keep our snowflakes (friendships) strong.

Divide students into small groups of 3–4.
Give each group a Conflict Snowball Scenario Card .
Groups read their scenario, identify the feelings involved, and choose one emoji card to represent each character’s emotion.
Students role-play a resolution using respectful phrases, guided by the Emoji Cards.

Two friends, Mia and Jayden, both grab the same red sled at the top of the hill. Jayden tries to pull the sled away, and Mia shouts, “That’s mine!”

Amira spends ten minutes building a snowman. While she’s away getting a carrot nose, Leo adds his own decorations—making the snowman look very different. Amira returns and stomps her foot.
