Words That Build Lesson Plan Elementary Counseling Core Curriculum
Words That Build: Lesson Plan
Grades 2–5 • 45 Mins
Tier 1 Classroom / Small Group Guidance
Targeted Behaviors
Swearing, insults, mocking, playground put-downs, and verbal exclusion during play.
Core Counseling Focus
Emotional impulse control, social perspective-taking, and assertive replacement scripts.
ASCA Standards
B-SMS 1: Self-discipline and self-control. B-SS 2: Positive peer relationships.
Student Learning Objectives
• Identify the impact of foul language, teasing, and put-downs on trust and classroom safety.
• Apply the "3-Second Filter" (Is it True? Helpful? Kind?) before speaking in high-emotion moments.
• Demonstrate 3 verbal replacements to express frustration, anger, or boundaries without swearing.
Preparation & Materials
• 1 tube of inexpensive toothpaste + 1 paper plate + 2 craft sticks.
• Slide deck: Words That Build Slides (Counselor display).
• Student Handout: Word Filter Challenge Worksheet (1 per student).
• Chart paper / whiteboard with "Wrecking Ball Words vs. Builder Words".
1 The Toothpaste Hook: The Weight of Unkind Words (10 Mins) Engage & Experiential
Demonstration: Invite a volunteer to squeeze an entire tube of toothpaste onto a paper plate (takes ~5 seconds). Prompt: "Now, take these craft sticks and put every drop back into the tube in 60 seconds."
Counselor Script: "Notice how easy it was to squirt out in anger or impulse? But putting it back is impossible. When we curse, yell an insult, or tell someone 'You can't play,' those words leave the tube. Even after saying 'I was just joking,' the stain remains."
2 Direct Teaching: Why Bad Language Happens & The 3-Second Filter (12 Mins) Counseling Concept
Underlying Roots of Swearing / Insults:
Hot Brain: Big anger looking for explosive release.
Status/Fitting In: Trying to sound older or tough.
Defense Shield: Attacking first before feeling hurt.
The "T.H.I.N.K." 3-Second Filter:
T – Is it True? (Not exaggerated slander)
H – Is it Helpful? (Does it solve or hurt?)
N – Is it Necessary? (Does it need saying?)
K – Is it Kind? (Does it build up dignity?)

Guided Practice & Restoration Protocol
Active Skill Practice, Real-Life Roleplays, and Restorative Action
Part 2 of 2
3 Guided Practice: The "Word Swap" Gym (13 Mins) Active Skill Building
Model how to replace "trash talk" or reactive profanity with Clear, Calm, Firm Statements (CCF) :
Toxic / Swear Reaction
→
Builder Word Swap (Assertive & Respectful)
"You suck! Get out of here!" ⇄ "I'm feeling overwhelmed right now. I need space to finish my game."
"That's so stupid / [Cursing at loss]" ⇄ "I'm really frustrated that I lost, but good game. Next round is mine!"
"Nobody likes you, don't sit here!" ⇄ "We have four at this table, but there is an open chair right over there!"
The 3-A Repair Protocol (What to do when wrong words slip out)
1 Acknowledge
Name the hurtful word directly without excuses: "I called you a name when I was angry. That was wrong."
2 Apologize
Own the impact on the other person: "I'm sorry I hurt your feelings and made recess stressful."
3 Act to Rebuild
Offer restorative connection: "Can we restart the turn, or would you like to pass?"
Differentiation & Support
For Younger/ELL Learners: Use visual stoplight cards (Red = Stop & Breathe, Yellow = Think, Green = Builder Words) and partner echo-reading.
For Upper Elementary: Add digital communication focus (cyber-insults, online gaming chat, text etiquette).
Tier 2 Small Group Follow-Up
For students with chronic profanity or reactive aggressive habits: conduct a 4-week "Cool Down Crew" lunch club focused on physiological trigger tracking (clenched fists, racing pulse) and visual replacement cue cards.
Formative Assessment & Counselor Success Metrics
1. Roleplay Check: Student demonstrates taking 1 deep breath before responding during the classroom practice round.
2. Worksheet Mastery: Student correctly translates at least 2 toxic statements into respectful assertiveness.
3. 14-Day Post Check: 50% or greater decrease in recess discipline referrals for vulgarity/verbal intimidation.

Squeezing Words Out
It takes just 1 second to yell a swear word, drop an insult, or tell a classmate they can't sit with you.
⚡ Fast, impulsive, and sharp.
Putting Them Back In
Once words leave your mouth, you cannot un-say them . Saying "I was just joking" doesn't remove the sting.
🛡️ What you release is out in the room forever.
Remember: Words can either be bricks that build or stones that hurt . Think First
Heart & Brain Science
Why Do Bad Words Slip Out?
1
Hot Brain (Anger)
When something feels unfair or we lose a game, our brain gets hot and wants to explode with shock words.
2
Trying to Look Tough
Copying swear words heard in older sibling videos or games just to get a reaction or fit in with a crowd.
3
Habit Without Thinking
Letting hurtful teasing slip out automatically without stopping to check if the other person is hurting inside.
Big feelings are totally normal! But hurtful words are a choice. You can control the words you pick.
Mental Strategy
The 3-Second Brain Filter
T
Is it TRUE?
Are you stating facts or exaggerating out of sudden anger?
H
Is it HELPFUL?
Does this solve the problem, or does it make drama bigger?
N
Is it NEEDED?
Does this really need to be spoken out loud to the group?
K
Is it KIND?
Would you want a friend to say these exact words to you?
Rule of Thumb: Take 1 deep breath before the word crosses your lips!

The Word Filter Rule: Once words leave your mouth, they are out forever (just like squeezed toothpaste!). Words can either be Wrecking Balls that tear people down, or Building Bricks that make trust stronger.
1 The Toothpaste Truth: Quick Reflection
Think of a time someone said an unkind word or swear word when they were angry. Why does saying "I was only joking!" not magically erase the hurt?
2 Word Filter Check: Sort Each Statement
Read each statement. Mark whether it acts like a Wrecking Ball or a Builder Brick .
"You're the worst player on this whole team! Why did you do that?!"
Wrecking Ball Builder Brick
"I'm feeling really frustrated right now, so I need to step away for 1 minute."
Wrecking Ball Builder Brick
"Don't let them sit here. Nobody wants them at this lunch table."
Wrecking Ball Builder Brick
"Nice try! It was a close game. Let's practice that pass together."
Wrecking Ball Builder Brick

The Word Swap Transformer
Part 2 of 2
When we get angry, our first thought might be a swear word or an insult. In each scenario below, transform that hot thought into a Calm, Clear Builder Statement .
Scenario 1: The Four-Square Out Impulse: Swearing / Insult
A referee says your ball hit the line and calls you out. You are furious and want to scream: "You are blind and so stupid!"
What can you say instead using your 3-Second Filter?
Scenario 2: Recess Group Exclusion Impulse: Excluding / Put-Down
A classmate walks up and asks to join your game of tag. You already have 6 people. You feel like saying: "No, get lost! You're annoying."
How can you speak respectfully and offer an inclusive solution?

Actively invites others and uses encouraging Builder Words during play. Restorative Repair (3-A) Denies wrongdoing or claims "it was just a joke" when called out. Gives scripted apology only when directed by an authority figure. Owns impact sincerely, apologizes without excuses, and offers repair.
