A 5-Question Script Guide for Classroom Re-Entry Conversations
Developmental Focus:
Verbal & Reflective
Pre-Conversation Checklist
Regulate First: Ensure both you and the student are fully calm before initiating the conversation.
Neutral Space: Conduct conversation side-by-side or at a 90° angle, avoiding adversarial face-off.
Objective Lens: Approach with curiosity. The goal is connection and repair, not lecturing.
1
Step 1: Uncover the Event (What Happened?)
Objective: Facts, not excuses
"I noticed things got really tough earlier and you had to step out. Can you tell me what happened from your perspective?"
Facilitator Tip: If they shrug, offer choices: "Did it start when the writing began, or when someone spoke to you?"
2
Step 2: Map the Mind (Thoughts & Feelings)
Objective: Emotional naming
"What were you thinking or feeling in that exact moment when that happened? How are you feeling about it now?"
Facilitator Tip: Connect bodily sensations to feelings: "Did your chest feel tight?" Validate feelings before actions.
3
Step 3: Analyze the Impact (Who Was Affected?)
Objective: Empathy development
"Who else do you think was affected by what happened today? In what way do you think they were affected?"
Facilitator Tip: Prompt them specifically on others: classmates (safety/learning) and the teacher (concern/interruption).
4
Step 4: Repair the Harm (Making it Right)
Objective: Accountable action
"What do you think we need to do to make things right and repair the relationship with the class and with me?"
Facilitator Tip: Focus on repair over punishment. Examples: verbal/written apology, helping reorganize, or a silent handshake.
5
Step 5: Prevent Future Occurrences (The Plan)
Objective: Actionable strategy
"Next time you start feeling that way again, what can you do instead? How can I help you stick to that?"
Facilitator Tip: Establish a clear signal or card (e.g., break card, desk sign) for early intervention.
