Your Past Doesn't Define You
Phase 1
Introduction (1 Minute)
Teacher: "Hi [Student's Name]! Thanks for coming today. I'm really looking forward to our time together. We're going to talk about something important today: how we see ourselves and how our past actions can sometimes affect that."
"Our goal is to understand that who you were or what you did in the past doesn't have to define who you are today or who you can become. It's about growth and self-compassion."
Phase 2
Warm-Up: Three Good Things (5 Minutes)
Teacher: "To get started, I want to do a quick warm-up. Let's think about some positive things. Can you share three good things that have happened to you recently, or three things you are grateful for?"
"They can be big or small, anything that brought a little bit of joy. I'll share one of mine first: I'm grateful for a sunny morning walk I had today."
Facilitation Tip:
Listen actively, make eye contact, and offer encouraging remarks. Prompt gently if she struggles to find things to share.
Phase 3
Activity: Rewriting Your Story (15 Minutes)
Teacher: "Now, we're going to move into an activity called 'Rewriting Your Story'. This is a personal reflection exercise, and it's really a chance for you to think about your experiences and how you've grown from them."
"You don't have to share everything you write with me, it's mostly for you, but I'm here to listen if you want to talk through any parts."
During the Activity:
Allow independent work. Observe without interrupting.
Offer a gentle check-in around the 8-minute mark.
Ask: "How are you doing with the activity? Do you need a few more minutes?"
Phase 4
Discussion: Moving Forward (10 Minutes)
Question 1 (3 Minutes)
"Thinking about what you wrote, what's one new thing you realized about yourself or your past behaviors?"
Goal: Validate feelings; guide toward self-compassion.
Question 2 (3 Minutes)
"How can understanding that you can learn and grow from past experiences help you feel better about yourself today?"
Goal: Connect past actions to growth opportunities, not fixed labels.
Question 3 (3 Minutes)
"What's one small step you can take this week to focus more on your positive qualities rather than dwelling on mistakes?"
Goal: Identify a concrete, actionable daily habit (e.g., gratitude journal).
