Pacing & Phased Instructional Sequence (45 Minutes)
1 Ignite: The Ownership Spectrum (Hook)
7 Min
Contrast two scenarios: "Doing 20 practice problems because it's assigned" vs. "Practicing 20 problems to build mental math speed for game design." Ask students which goal sustains effort when tired. Establish: today, students choose their own direction.
Teacher Voice: "When someone else picks your goal, you're a passenger. Today, you take the driver's seat."
2 Explore: The 3 Arenas of Choice
10 Min
Present 3 arenas for self-direction: 1. Academic Craft (skills, curiosity), 2. Habit & Focus (routines, emotional regulation), and 3. Creative / Community Impact (projects, helping others). Validate all three as equally noble and rigorous.
Agency Principle: If a student does not care about the goal, it is not a valid goal yet. Support them in pivoting.
3 Craft: The Deep "Why" & Micro-Action

Hand out Page 2. Guide students through the "3 Whys" Drill: Why this goal? → Why does it matter to me? → Who does it help me become? Students then formulate one 10-minute micro-action executable within 48 hours to spark agency momentum.
Voice Anchor: Push past compliance ("to get an A") toward identity ("to trust my ability to tackle hard problems").
4 Peer Exchange & Exit Ticket Commit
15 Min
Pair-Share Protocol (7 min): Partner A reads their goal and "Why." Partner B asks: "What makes this goal truly yours?" Swap roles. Students then complete their Agency Ownership Meter and sign their self-commitment (8 min).
Voice Inquiry Prompts
- • "How does chasing your own goal feel different from chasing an assigned task?"
- • "If grades didn't exist, what skill or project would you still build?"
- • "When friction happens, what personal reason will keep you moving?"
Autonomy-Supportive Moves
Choice Language: Say "You have several pathways here..." instead of controlling phrases like "You need to pick from these."
Differentiation: Allow audio recording or sketchnoting for students who articulate thoughts better orally.
