First Connections Facilitator Guide Facilitator Lesson Blueprint Session Duration: 45–55 Minutes | Target: Grades 6–12 & Adults
First Connections: Names & Shared Horizons
A low-stakes introductory session designed to establish mutual respect, master peer name recall, and reveal safe personal affinities without awkward spotlighting.
Learning Objectives
Pronounce & recall 5+ peer names accurately.
Share 3 comfortable, non-sensitive personal interests.
Articulate shared group norms for mutual support.
Psychological Safety
Right to pass: Students may modify any prompt.
Low-stakes bounds: Favorite snacks, sounds, hobbies.
No forced personal disclosure: Avoid family/money/trauma.
Materials Needed
Desk Name Tent & Activity Sheet (1 per student).
Broad-tip bold markers & colored pencils.
Projection slides & soft acoustic background music.
Instructional Sequence (Part 1)
1 Entry & Name Tent Workshop (8 Mins)
Solo Warm-Up
Procedure: Students enter to welcoming instrumental music. Distribute the Name Sparks Activity Sheet . Instruct students to fold the top portion into a triangular 3D desk name tent, writing their preferred first name in large bold letters with phonetic pronunciation notes if desired.
Teacher Script: "Welcome everyone! Today is entirely about learning who is in our circle and making sure each name is said correctly and with respect. Write your name clearly so someone sitting across the room can read it."
2 Alliteration All-Call & Cadence Toss (12 Mins)
Whole Group Circle
Procedure: Students stand in a circle with their name tents resting in front of them or held up. Student 1 announces their name paired with an uplifting alliteration adjective (e.g., "Curious Carlos") plus their favorite weekend recharge activity. The whole circle repeats the name back in unison: "Hello, Curious Carlos!"
Facilitator Tip: Immediate choral repetition significantly lowers individual performance anxiety while anchoring phonetics into everyone's auditory memory simultaneously.
3 Low-Stakes Speed Affinity Matrix (18 Mins)
Pair Mingling
Procedure: Students use the "Connection Matrix" on their handout. At each chime (90 seconds), pairs swap partners and ask one light question (e.g., "Best pizza topping?", "Morning lark or night owl?", "Favorite fictional universe?"). Students record names in matching boxes.

4 Group Debrief & Name Chain (8 Mins)
Gather back in the central circle. Challenge volunteers to recall 3 peers' names and one safe fun fact learned.
Key Anchor Question: "What is one unexpected thing you discovered you have in common with someone you had never spoken to before?"
5 Quiet Horizon Exit Slip (5 Mins)
Students transition to silent solo reflection on the bottom half of Page 2 of their activity sheet.
Prompt Focus: One peer name they commit to greeting tomorrow, and one hope for what this group can achieve together this term.
Prompt Calibration Guide: Low-Risk vs. High-Risk
Recommended Low-Risk Prompts
• "What snack could you eat every day without getting tired of it?"
• "If you could instantly become a master at any musical instrument, which?"
• "What is your go-to song when you need an energy boost?"
• "Would you rather explore outer space or the deep ocean trenches?"
Avoid in First Sessions (High-Risk)
• Family vacations (socio-economic sensitivity).
• "Proudest life moment" or "biggest struggle" (performance pressure).
• Physical appearance or dating/crush inquiries.
• Political, religious, or contentious social stances.
Inclusivity & Differentiation Tactics
Shy / Introverted Learners
Allow written responses on cards; offer pair mingling instead of solo spotlights; give 30 seconds of quiet think time before asking for speech.
Multilingual / ELL Learners
Encourage writing names in their home language script alongside phonetic English; provide visual emoji cards for speed chat prompts.
Mobility / Sensory Needs
Keep mingling pathways wide and clear; permit students to sit and have partners rotate to them; maintain moderate ambient sound levels.
First-Day Observational Checklist (Teacher Formative Log)
✓ All students successfully display a legible, preferred name tent.
✓ Every student makes reciprocal contact with at least 4 different peers.
✓ Zero instances of mocking or awkward forced disclosure observed.
