Defining the Inner Voice
Explain that the inner voice is like a "radio station" playing in our heads. Sometimes it's the Inner Critic (pointing out mistakes) and sometimes it's the Inner Coach (encouraging growth).
"The goal isn't to never have negative thoughts, but to change how we talk back to them."
Transformation Examples
Critic:
"I'm so bad at math. I'll never get this."
Coach:
"This is hard right now, but I can figure it out with practice and help."
Guiding Questions for Discussion
If your best friend said that negative thought out loud, what would you say to them?
What kind of coach gets the best performance: one who yells or one who encourages?
What is a "Power Phrase" you can use when you feel stuck?
How does it feel in your body when your inner voice is being a Coach vs. a Critic?
Differentiation & Support
For Scaffolding
Provide a list of "Coach Phrases" for students to choose from if they struggle to generate their own affirmations.
For Extension
Have students create a "Coach's Whistle" card with their affirmation to keep on their desk for challenging moments.
Social Support
Partner students with different strengths for the role-play activity to ensure diverse perspectives.
