Sunny Calm & Happy Light body, smiling, easy breathing
Cloudy Unsure or Quiet Slow movements, yawning, quiet voice
Rainy Sad or Hurt Heavy eyes, tears, slumped shoulders
Stormy Angry / Frustrated Clenched jaw/fists, fast pulse, heat
Windy Wiggly / Anxious Restless feet, racing thoughts, jitters
1 Circle Time Hook: The Classroom Meteorologists (8 Mins) Slides 1–3
Gather students on the rug. Begin with an interactive prompt: "Look outside our window—what is the sky doing right now? Just like the outside sky has weather that changes every day, we each have an inner sky inside our minds and bodies!"
Key SEL Message: All weather is normal and welcome. The sky is never broken because it rains or storms; the sky always has room for the weather to pass.
2 Body Clue Detectives: Reading Our Internal Barometer (10 Mins) Slides 4–6
Guide students to touch their bodies as they identify physical clues that signal incoming emotional weather before it escalates:
💓 Heart & Chest Beating like a hummingbird or smooth and calm.
🦋 Stomach & Core Fluttering butterflies, tight knot, or relaxed.
✊ Hands & Shoulders Clenched fists, raised shoulders, or loose arms.

3 Calming Weather Toolkit: Matching Strategy to Weather (12 Mins) Slides 7–9
Model and rehearse the 4 physical self-regulation tools with whole-body movement:
Sun Breath (For Stormy / Rushed)
Sweep arms up like a sunrise while breathing in 4 seconds; press palms and exhale like sunset.
Mountain Tree Grounding (For Windy)
Plant feet like tree roots into the ground; press hands to thighs and find 3 still objects in the room.
Gentle Raindrop Taps (For Rainy / Sad)
Use fingertips to gently tap collarbones and arms like soft spring rain to re-energize and soothe.
Thunder Shake & Freeze (For High Energy)
Shake hands and wiggle toes vigorously for 5 seconds, then freeze completely still like a mountain.
4 Student Activity Sheet: Today's Forecast (10 Mins) Student Handout
Students move to tables to complete their Weather Report Activity Sheet . They color their current internal weather, circle where their body feels the signal, and pick a calming tool card to place in their desk toolkit.
Differentiation & Accessibility Strategies
Kindergarten / Emerging
Allow students to point to pictorial weather badges and mimic animal breathing sounds instead of written responses.
1st & 2nd Grade Extension
Encourage writing descriptive feeling words (e.g., "drizzly," "gusty") and journaling what caused the weather shift.
Sensory & Calming Corner
Provide tactile weather stress-balls (sun puff, cloud squishy) and place card sets in the quiet reading nook.
Formative Assessment Checklist
