A middle school communication unit empowering 7th and 8th graders to master academic self-advocacy. Students learn structured protocols to ask for help, clarify feedback, and negotiate deadlines through interactive slides, scenario rehearsal cards, and discussion guides.
Asking for an extension at the start of class is an excuse. Reaching out 24 to 48 hours prior with your partial progress is professional negotiation.
1. Own Progress
"I've completed the outline and first two pages of my project..."
2. Explain Load
"...but with two exams tomorrow, I need focused time to finish the bibliography."
3. Propose Exact Time
"Could I turn this in on Monday at 8:00 AM instead of Friday afternoon?"
Always offer a specific date and time—never leave the teacher guessing when they will get your work.
Live Practice
Studio Rehearsal Protocol
15-Minute Drill
Partner A: Student Advocate
1. Pick a scenario card from your table.
2. Take 60 seconds to prepare your 3 beats: Acknowledge, Show Effort, Know the Ask.
3. Deliver your request with calm posture and eye contact.
Partner B: Teacher Role
1. Start neutral or slightly rushed (realistic!).
2. Evaluate: Did they identify the exact problem? Did they show effort?
3. Give 1 piece of constructive feedback, then switch roles.
Goal: Every student practices at least 2 complete scenarios today. Grab your Scenario Cards!
Partner B (Teacher Role): You want to ensure students tried resolving it respectfully without immediately "tattling."
Advocate Stems: "Our project deadline is Thursday... / I completed section A and reached out twice... / How should I proceed?"
CARD 05
Catching Up After a 3-Day Absence
Category: Academic Recovery
Situation: You were home sick with the flu for 3 days. You checked Google Classroom and copied notes from a classmate, but you feel completely lost on the lab procedure scheduled for this morning.
Partner B (Teacher Role): You appreciate when absent students show initiative rather than asking: "Did we do anything while I was gone?"
Advocate Stems: "I reviewed the chapter 4 slides from Google Classroom... / I understand the safety steps, but am unclear on... / Could I confirm...?"
CARD 06
Rubric Discrepancy or Grading Error
Category: Clarifying Deductions
Situation: You received 14/20 on your social studies infographic. The rubric marked you down for "missing primary source citations," but you included 3 primary sources with bibliographic footnotes at the bottom of the poster.
Partner B (Teacher Role): You graded 80 posters late last night. You may have missed the footer footnote, but you won't respond well to accusations.
Advocate Stems: "I noticed the comment regarding primary sources... / I placed the citations in the lower footnote box... / Would you mind taking a look?"
Bonus Rehearsal Twists (For Partner B):
Twist 1: Say you have only 20 seconds before hall duty. • Twist 2: Ask: "Did you check the syllabus or ask a peer first?" • Twist 3: Agree to an extension, but ask them to email you a summary by 4:00 PM today.
