How Does Hard Work Feel?
Everyone gets stuck sometimes! That means your brain is growing.
💓
Fast Heart
Your body feels tight, buzzy, or hot like an engine.
🌪️
Too Many Words
Step 1, Step 2, Step 3 swirl around your head.
🛑
Wanting to Stop
You feel like pushing the paper away or giving up.
✨ Secret Rule: When work feels hard, we don't quit. We use our 3 Reset Moves!
🎈
Reset Move 1
The 3-Second Balloon Breath
1
Put hands on belly
Rest your pencil. Feel your belly like a soft balloon.
2
Breathe in through nose
Smell a giant flower: 1... 2... 3...
3
Slow blow out mouth
Blow out birthday candles gently: whooooosh.
🌬️🎈
Try It Right Now!
Inhale deeply... exhale slowly...
Your brain just got fresh oxygen!
💡 When body is calm, thinking gets easier!
✂️
Reset Move 2
Chop It Down to Step 1!
😵💫
Don't look at all 3 steps at once!
Looking at step 1, step 2, AND step 3 makes your brain feel crowded.
FIRST
Step 1 Only
Just write your name. Cover up the rest with your hand!
✏️ ✅
NEXT
Step 2 Later
Do not look yet! Finish Step 1 first.
⏳
THEN
Step 3 Last
You will get here when Step 2 is done!
🏁
✨ Super Rule: "I only have to do ONE step right now!"
🙋
Reset Move 3
Use Helper Words
Instead of giving up...
Raise your hand & say:
"I finished Step 1. Can you help me find Step 2?"
This tells the teacher exactly what you need!
If you feel stuck...
Or you can say:
"My brain feels stuck. Can we do one example together?"
Asking for help is a superpower, not a weakness!
🤝 Practice phrase: "Step 1 is done! Helper, show me Step 2!"

PHASE 1
Think-Aloud & Modeling (7 Mins)
TEACHER:
"Watch me. I'm looking at this paper with three long directions. My hands feel tight, and my brain wants to push the paper away. But wait! That's my signal. I put my hands on my belly: smell the flower (1-2-3), blow out the balloon (whoosh) ."
ACTION:
Physically cover the bottom two-thirds of the worksheet with an index card or your hand. Show the class that only Step 1 is visible.
SCRIPT:
"I do not look at Step 2 or 3! My brain only needs to write my name right now. Done! Once Step 1 has a checkmark, my brain is ready for Step 2."
PHASE 2
Deconstructing 2-3 Step Directions (10 Mins)
1. The "Hand Mask"
Teach student to place their non-dominant hand flat over Steps 2 & 3. Visual occlusion prevents cognitive overload.
2. Echo & Repeat
Prompt: "What is your ONLY job right now?" Student responds aloud: "Just Step 1!" before placing pencil on paper.
3. The Checkmark Win
Immediate tactile reinforcement: student marks the physical checkbox beside Step 1 before uncovering Step 2.
💡 Prompting Hierarchy: Non-verbal point to desk strip → Visual tap on Step 1 → Verbal helper prompt.

Why First Graders Meltdown When Work Is Unfinished:
Young learners with perfectionistic tendencies or executive functioning delays perceive stopping as failure , loss of effort , or rule violation . They fear their paper will be discarded or graded as a zero. Providing a visible, permanent "safe space" eliminates the catastrophe narrative.
