Grit Lab
Mission: Productive Struggle
Perseverance
"Working through a challenge even when it gets difficult, frustrating, or confusing."
It's NOT:
Getting it right on the first try.
It IS:
Refusing to quit when you get stuck.
Welcome to "The Pit"
YOU (STUCK)
Strategy A
Strategy B
The "Learning Pit" is where the best brain growth happens. If it’s easy, you aren't learning anything new!
Mission Briefing
The Great Gem Heist Logic Puzzle
1
Work in teams of 4 to solve the sequence.
2
You will get "stuck." This is expected!
3
Use your Mission File to track failed attempts.
15 MINUTES
Total Lab Time
Lab Protocols
Explain
Don't just give the answer. Explain your thinking to the group.
Iterate
If a path fails, mark it as "Data" and try a different route.
Support
No one quits until the whole lab succeeds or the timer ends.
Debrief
How did it feel when you were "stuck"?
What specific action helped your group move forward?
Why is it important to "struggle" in math?

Target: The Obsidian Vault
You have 15 minutes to crack the 4-digit code using the clues below. Remember: getting stuck is part of the mission protocol.
Vault Clues
- 1 The vault code has 4 different digits.
- 2 The sum of all four digits is exactly 20.
- 3 The first digit is double the last digit.
- 4 The second digit is the sum of the first and last digit.
- 5 The third digit is a prime number.

Grit Lab: Facilitation Guide
Classification: Teacher-Facing Resource
Mission Duration: 30 Minutes
Learning Objective
Students will demonstrate academic perseverance by working through a challenging math logic puzzle. They will practice identifying the "Learning Pit," iterating on failed strategies, and communicating mathematical thinking within a group.
Prep & Materials
- Grit Lab Slides
- Grit Lab Mission Files (1 per group of 4)
- Timer (visible to class)
- Optional: "Code Cracker" stickers/stamps
Mission Timeline
0-5 MIN
The Briefing (Slides 1-3)
Define perseverance and introduce "The Pit." Emphasize that feeling stuck is a sign of high-level learning.
5-20 MIN
The Lab (Slides 4-5)
Groups solve the Obsidian Vault code. Teacher Role: Circulate and praise struggle rather than speed. Use "The Pit" vocabulary.
20-30 MIN
The Debrief (Slide 6)
Gather as a whole group. Discuss strategies used to climb out of "The Pit" and how this applies to future math tasks.

Logic Path: If the 4th digit is 3, the 1st digit must be 6 (double). The 2nd digit must be 9 (6+3). The sum of 6+9+3 is 18. To reach a total of 20, the 3rd digit must be 2. Since 2 is prime, all clues are satisfied.
The "Lab Director" Script
When a group says "We're stuck"
"Excellent! You've found the Pit. That's where the learning happens. Show me your Mission File—what data did your last failed attempt give you?"
When a group gives up
"In the Grit Lab, we don't need the right answer yet; we just need a new path. Pick one clue and try to build a code around just that one clue. What happens?"
