Transition Toolbelt
Managing energy pivots during daily school transitions
45 Minutes
Core Concept
Self-Regulation & Energy Shifts
Core Metaphor
The Energy Toolbelt & Gauges
Materials Needed
Slide Deck, Game Board, Worksheets
Learning Objectives
Students will identify and define three distinct personal energy states: High (Red), Focused (Green), and Low/Calm (Blue).
Students will select and execute specific physical and cognitive tools to shift their energy states appropriately.
Students will practice collaborative decision-making regarding transition management during team gameplay.
Instructional Pacing
1
Phase 1: The Energy Audit (Hook)
5 mins
Prompt: "Imagine trying to read a textbook while jumping on a trampoline. Why is that hard?" Introduce the concept that our brains and bodies have different "gears" or energy levels.
Dialogue: "Today, we are building a transition toolbelt to shift our energy gears seamlessly!"
2
Phase 2: The Three Energy Zones (Direct Instruction)
12 mins
Using the Transition Toolbelt Slides , introduce the three primary zones:
Red: High Energy
Recess, gym, play. Body moving, loud voice.
Green: Focus Energy
Math, reading, desk work. Listening, focused brain.
Blue: Low Energy
Relaxation, quiet time, tests. Still body, quiet mind.
Define a "Pivot" as the act of deliberately changing your energy to match the current setting using custom cognitive and physical tools.
3
Phase 3: Building Toolbelt Strategies
8 mins
Introduce tools for different pivots. Up-regulation tools (going Blue/Green to Red) include arm stretches, quick physical shakeouts. Down-regulation tools (going Red to Green) include box breathing (4-4-4 count) and grounding (finding 3 objects).

Guided & Independent Practice
4
Phase 4: Energy Pivot Board Game (Guided Practice)
13 mins
Divide students into small groups of 3-4. Provide each group with the Energy Pivot Board Game and a set of Pivot Scenario Cards .
How to Facilitate Game Night:
1. Students take turns drawing Scenario Cards (e.g., "Walking in from high-speed tag to quiet reading").
2. To advance, they must state their current energy state (Red) and target energy state (Blue/Green), and demo a tool from their "toolbelt" (e.g., doing 3 belly breaths).
5
Phase 5: My Reset Toolbelt (Independent Application)
5 mins
Hand out the My Reset Toolbelt Tool . Students identify their personal top 3 strategies for the 3 major transitions of their school day (Morning arrival, Post-recess, Post-lunch quiet time). They write and illustrate these physical and mental tools in their personalized belt slots.
6
Phase 6: The Toolbelt Pledge (Debrief & Closing)
2 mins
Have students stand and hold their imaginary "Toolbelt". Recite the pledge together: "I own my energy. I have the tools. I can pivot whenever my day needs a change."
Pro-Tips & Differentiation
For Students Who Struggle:
Provide visual anchor charts of basic tools (e.g., finger-tracing, chair push-ups). Pair them with an "Energy Buddy" to practice together before individual execution.
Extension / Pacing Check:
Appoint "Energy Captains" each week who lead the transition drills (e.g., calling out a box breath sequence when returning from cafeteria).

What is a "Pivot"?
A pivot is when you intentionally change your physical energy, volume, and focus to match your next environment.
A
High Energy Scene
Running outside on the playground, screaming, and playing intense tag at recess.
B
Focused Energy Scene
Entering math class, looking at the board, listening to the teacher's instructions.
Why do we need a toolbelt to pivot? Slide 2 of 6
The Three Energy Zones
Red Zone
High Energy
Heart pumping fast, loud voice, big body movements.
Best for: Recess & PE
Green Zone
Focus Energy
Calm body, active listening, thinking brain, quiet hands.
Best for: Lessons & Reading
Blue Zone
Low Energy
Still body, whispering or zero voice, fully relaxed.
Best for: Resting & Tests

Tools to Pivot Your Energy
We use three types of self-regulation tools to pivot from Red to Green, or Green to Blue:
The Breath Tool
Box Breathing:
Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds.
The Body Tool
Desk Push-Ups:
Place your hands on your desk and push yourself up slowly. Feel your muscles flex.
The Brain Tool
The 3-2-1 Focus:
Silently point to 3 blue objects in the room, touch 2 textures, and listen for 1 small sound.
Tools help us safely change our gears. Slide 4 of 6
The Energy Pivot Game!
You are going to play a game in teams. Here is how you earn your transition badges:
1
Draw a Scenario Card describing a common school transition.
2
Identify the Pivot: State what Zone you are in, and what Zone you need to reach to be ready.
3
Demo the Tool: Act out or explain the exact breath, body, or brain tool you would use to make that shift!
Work together to master each transition! Slide 5 of 6
