Self-Regulation Lesson for Grades 3-5 (45 Minutes)
Control Panel Theme
Lesson Overview
Students explore self-regulation by imagining their minds and bodies as sophisticated control panels. By treating their emotional and physical states as "energy dials" (High, Low, or Cruise Control), students learn to identify internal signals and proactively apply targeted strategies to shift their energy back to an optimal, ready-to-learn state.
Learning Objectives

• Select 3 coping strategies tailored to balance different energy levels.
The Dashboard Framework
Low Battery
Cues: Tired, slow, bored, sad
Goal is to recharge with movement, hydration, or light stretching.
Cruise Control
Cues: Focused, calm, ready, happy
Goal is to maintain with mindful breathing and positive focus.
High Turbo
Cues: Angry, excited, anxious, wiggly
Goal is to release/cool with breathing or progressive relaxation.
Pacing & Instruction Steps

Hook: The Unresponsive Console (7 mins)
Step 1
Ask students to pretend they are space pilots. Introduce a scenario: "You are piloting your vessel, but your dashboard control dials are spinning wild! You can't control your speed. What happens to your mission?" Connect this to our emotional states: when our internal gauges run too high or low without us noticing, we can crash our day.

Direct Instruction: Calibrating the Gauges (12 mins)
Step 2
Present the Dashboard Slides . Walk through the physical signs of each state. Demonstrate how to check the internal dashboard: "Let's check our heart rate, muscle tension, and thoughts." Encourage students to practice showing what "Low Battery" body posture looks like versus "High Turbo" and "Cruise Control."

Guided Practice: My Dashboard Worksheet (15 mins)
Step 3
Hand out the Internal Dashboard Worksheet . Model how to complete each quadrant. Encourage students to draw their current dial indicator and choose exactly 3 coping mechanics for their custom control interface. Tell them to make it their own—designing custom knobs and naming their strategies.

Reflection & Cool-Down Selection (11 mins)
Step 4
Introduce the Cool-Down Checklist . Show how to check-in when transition times occur. Conduct a brief class demonstration of "Belly Breathing" or "Desk Push-ups" as examples of active adjustments. Give students their cool-down reminder cards to tape inside their desks or folders.

Checking Energy: "Check your dashboard lights. Are you idling too low, racing too fast, or cruising smoothly?"
Normalizing All States: "Remember, having a 'High Turbo' state isn't a bad thing! An athlete needs high energy. But inside a quiet classroom, we need to adapt our dashboard."
Differentiation
For Kinesthetic Learners: Let them physically run in place for 15 seconds to simulate high turbo, and sit floppy to feel low battery.
For Non-Verbal/EL Students: Encourage them to use color-coded blocks (Red/Green/Blue) to show their dashboard state.
Advanced Extensions: Have students design an "automatic toggle trigger" (e.g., "If I get to level 8 out of 10, then I must execute Strategy A").
