A fast 5-minute social-emotional reset routine designed for upper elementary students to overcome task overwhelm, reset nervous system energy, and build independent work initiation strategies.
Freezes because they erase constantly or fear producing messy, flawed work.
💬 Say: "Give me your worst rough draft first. We can fix anything that's on paper, but we can't edit a blank page. Show me one messy sentence."
The Overwhelmed ("There's too much!")
Looks at a multi-paragraph or multi-problem sheet and shuts down completely.
💬 Say: "Take this sticky note and cover the bottom 4 questions. You don't have to do the page. Just look at the first line with me."
The Direction-Dazed ("I don't know what to do")
Auditory directions drifted; student has working-memory fade and feels embarrassed.
💬 Say: "Let's read direction #1 together out loud in a whisper. Put your finger on the verb. What is that verb telling you to find?"
The Avoidant / Defiant ("This is stupid")
Masks low confidence or fatigue behind resistance and non-compliance.
💬 Say: "I hear that you're frustrated. You don't have to like this task, but I know you're capable. Do you want to start on odd numbers or even numbers?"
Display slides 1–5; collective 60-second breathing; simultaneous 5-minute silent sprint with digital visual timer.
Tier 2: Small Group
Chronic 5–10 min lag before writing first word
Laminated Launch Mats taped to desk corners; dry-erase Step-Zero commitment; teacher checks in at Minute 3.
Tier 3 / ADHD / IEP
Severe executive dysfunction, demand avoidance
Body doubling: Teacher or peer writes alongside student; provide choice of writing utensil (gel pen, highlighter); speech-to-text option for Step Zero.
Fading to Student Independence: The 3-Week Progression
Week 1: Teacher-Led Whole-group routine daily. Teacher narrates every step and facilitates breathing and countdown.
Week 2: Partner-Led Students turn to an 'Ignition Buddy' to verbally announce their Step Zero before starting the 5-min timer.
Week 3: Self-Initiated Students independently touch their desk mat whenever stuck, self-regulate, and begin without adult prompts.
