Instructional Objective
Engage students in grades 9–12 across four 30-minute small-group icebreaker sessions that use collaborative puzzles and reflection prompts to build peer connections and a supportive classroom community.
Material & Room Prep
Review the Mix Board slide deck to familiarize yourself with prompts.
Print and assemble copies of the Puzzle Partner activity for each pair.
Print or distribute digital copies of the First Impressions journal for each student.
Arrange seating to support small-group collaboration (clusters of 4-5).

The Four Sessions
Session 1: Personal Puzzle Introduction
30 Minutes • Goal: Introductions
Introduce objectives and establish Group Norms :
• Listen actively without interrupting
• Speak from your own experience
• Respect diverse opinions and backgrounds
• Use kind and supportive language
• Maintain confidentiality (what’s shared here stays here)
Activity: Distribute pre-cut puzzle pieces (from Template). Students solve their individual pieces, then assemble the full puzzle as a group. As pieces are placed, owners share the fact on the back.
Wrap Up: 5-minute entry in First Impressions journal: What surprised you about your peers?
Session 2: Collaborative Mix Board
30 Minutes • Goal: Finding Connections
Display the Mix Board slides. Explain rotating stations with prompts (hobbies, summer highlights, goals).
Process: Students rotate every 5 minutes to add responses. Encourage follow-up questions to uncover shared interests.
Share-Out: Highlight one interesting connection found across the group.
Wrap Up: Journal reflection: Note one new connection and why it stood out.
Session 3: Puzzle Partner
30 Minutes • Goal: Deepening Rapport
Pair students and provide the Puzzle Partner worksheet. Partners assemble the puzzle, then use the numbered backs to guide an interview.
Share-Out: Reconvene the group; each student introduces their partner based on the interview findings.
Wrap Up: Journal reflection: How did collaborating help you learn something new?
Session 4: Community Reflection
30 Minutes • Goal: Shared Culture
Students review their First Impressions entries. In groups, share one learned fact and one goal for the group culture.
Synthesis: Co-create a classroom agreement or values poster reflecting these shared goals.
Closing: Appreciation Circle—each student names one thing they appreciate about someone else in the group.

Rotation Instructions

Begin at your assigned station.

Spend 5 minutes sharing and adding responses.

On cue, rotate clockwise to the next station.

Explain timing and rotation clearly. Use a visible timer, audio cue, or countdown so students know when to move.
Finding Connections
Review the board and:
Identify one shared hobby or experience.
Circle or highlight it.

Have students scan all collected responses. Ask them to identify and mark one shared interest or similar experience with someone new.
Reflection Time
Open your First Impressions journal and answer:
What surprised you about your group?
What new connection did you make?

Prompt students to record their insights. Collect one key reflection per student to prepare for Session 4 share-out.

Puzzle Assembly (10 Minutes)
Spread out all puzzle pieces face down between you and your partner.
Take turns flipping one piece and trying to connect it with another.
When two pieces fit, note the number on the back. This is your interview question!
Assemble the full puzzle before moving to the interview.
