Feeling Detectives

A four-week Kindergarten social-emotional learning sequence aligned with Diane Alber's A Little Spot of Feelings: Emotion Detective. Students explore emotional clues across facial expressions, body language, and voice tone to identify feelings and practice self-regulation.

JRJoanna Richer
Clue Hunter Basics

Students are introduced to the Emotion Detective role from Alber's book and learn to gather clues using faces, bodies, and voices. Kindergarteners practice looking closely at physical indicators of feelings.

Big Three Spots

Students investigate the Happy, Sad, and Anger spots, discovering how each feeling creates physical signals in their bodies. They practice recognizing triggers and healthy expression.

Calm and Care

Students explore the Gray Worry/Anxiety Spot and the Green Peaceful Spot, learning somatic calming strategies and breathing techniques to transition from overwhelmed to calm.

Detective Case Files

Students combine all their investigative skills to crack classroom mystery scenarios, demonstrating empathy, peer-support, and emotional problem-solving before receiving their Junior Detective badges.

5. Closing Circle & Detective Oath (5 Min)

Reflection

Students return to the rug holding their sheets. Repeat the Junior Detective Motto together:
"Eyes look close, ears hear clear, I spot clues when feelings are near!"

Common K Misconceptions

Kindergarteners often equate crying only with sadness, missing that frustration, pain, or overwhelm also produce tears. Emphasize checking the body (fists vs slumped) to tell sadness and anger apart.

Differentiation & Support

Support: Provide cut-and-paste pre-drawn emotion mouths for students developing fine-motor pencil control.
Extension: Ask students to name one thing that causes their Happy Spot to grow huge.

Weekly Classroom Mission: Keep a "Clue Counter" tally on the whiteboard. When a student notices a peer looking sad or frustrated and alerts a teacher or offers comfort, add a detective clue badge!

Emotion Detective Family Dispatch • Issue 1 Page 2 of 2

Every spot visits us sometimes. Detectives do not chase feelings away—we notice them and help our bodies feel safe.

"I can feel happy. I can feel sad. I can feel mad. All my spots are welcome!"

Next: Match your clues on the Spot Match Activity!

Regulation Practice

Hold up 5 fingers as "birthday candles." Instruct children: "When our Red Spot or Blue Spot feels huge, we blow out our candles slowly: Smell the cake (inhale)... blow out candle 1 (exhale). Inhale... blow out candle 2..." Repeat until all 5 candles are out and hands are relaxed.

Emotion Center Explorations for Kindergarten

Yellow Joy Station

Yellow playdough, smiley stampers, and yellow pipe-cleaner smiley glasses.

Blue Comfort Station

Soft plush pillows, glitter calm-down jars with swirling blue water.

Red Release Station

Red squishy stress balls and scrap paper strips to tear into a recycle basket.

Teacher Trauma-Informed Reminder:

Never shame anger or sadness. Reassure students: "Anger is our body's alarm bell. It's okay to feel mad, but our hands stay gentle."

5. Closing Circle & Affirmation (5 Min)

Affirmation

Place both hands over the heart. Say together:
"I am safe. I am calm. I can breathe through any storm."

Teacher Co-Regulation Script (When a Child is Overwhelmed)

Step 1 (Validate): "I see your Gray/Red Spot is very big right now. It is okay to feel this way."

Step 2 (Safety): "You are safe here. I will stay right next to you until your body feels steady."

Step 3 (Invitation): "Would you like to trace our starfish hands together, or would you like to hold the soft plushie first?"

Kindergarten "Peaceful Spot" Corner Essentials:

Create a cozy nook with 2 soft floor cushions, a laminated Starfish breathing card, a glitter sensory bottle, noise-muffling headphones, and a feeling spot check-in wheel.

After Actor 1 freezes with their clues, ask the class: "Detectives, put on your spyglasses! What clues do you see?" Then invite Actor 2 to perform the empathy helper script.
