Habituation is the natural decrease in a response after repeated or prolonged exposure to a stimulus.
Example: The Pool
When you jump in, the water feels freezing (100 SUDS). After 10 minutes, it feels "fine." The water temperature didn't change—your brain just habituated.
The Key: Time
If you jump out of the pool after 30 seconds because it's cold, you never habituate. You just learn that "the pool is cold."

A Note on Differentiated Responses
For the Exposure Ladder Project (Lesson 3) , look for internal consistency rather than specific "correct" answers. A student who rates "Holding a spider" as a 10 and "Public speaking" as a 100 is just as correct as the reverse, provided their SUDS steps are incremental (15, 30, 45, etc.) and specific.
