The Emotional Hijack
When we feel angry or overwhelmed, the emotional alarm reacts in milliseconds, urging us to snap, shut down, or push away work.
Reaction time: Less than 1 second!
How Counting Protects You
Counting forces your prefrontal cortex (the thinking boss of your brain) to take over, buying 10 seconds of calm.
Counting shifts blood flow back to problem solving!
When you count, you choose your response instead of reacting blindly.
Counting Tool 1
The 10-Down Finger Tap
Rhythm + Count
Step 1
Rest Hands Flat

Tap 10 Down to 1
Slowly press one finger down per second while whispering or mentally saying numbers: 10, 9, 8...
1 tap per second
Step 3
The Zero Exhale
When you reach 1 and finish with 0, release one long deep breath and un-tense your shoulders.
Total Body Reset

Sensory Overload: Why The Body Needs A Reset
Sensory System
Sensory Traffic Jam
Classroom sounds, bright fluorescent lights, crowded hallways, and demanding tasks can overload your nervous system like bumper-to-bumper traffic.
The Sensory Solution
Focused sensory tools send calming signals through your muscles and skin receptors, clearing the traffic jam so you feel centered.
A sensory tool is a regulation tool, not a toy—it is used with purpose to stay calm.
Regulation Tools
The School Sensory Reset Menu

Choose the sensory reset that matches what your body needs in that moment.
The Classroom Sensory Contract
Responsible Use
Tool Use (Regulation Power)
Kept at your desk or lap level

Problem Solving
"What if 1 breath isn't enough?"
Normal! High-stress situations often need a "Double Combo": Run 3 cycles of Box Breathing, then do a 10-second finger tap.
"What if I don't have my tool?"
Your breath, counting, and chair push-ups travel with you everywhere! You never need equipment to regulate.
Confidence comes from knowing you always have an emergency reset ready.
