Calm Expedition Lesson Plan Grades K–2 45 Minutes • SEL / Self-Regulation
The Quiet Corner Expedition
CASEL: Self-Awareness & Management
Essential Question
"How can I notice what my body needs and use our cozy classroom tools to reset and return ready to learn?"
Student Learning Targets ("I Can")
• Identify body cues when feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, angry, or exhausted.
• Navigate the 4-step routine: Spot, Step, Settle (3-5 min), and Shine.
• Select appropriate sensory tools (breathing mats, glitter bottle, texture tiles).
Corner Inventory & Sensory Prep
Setup prior to lesson
Breath Base Starfish mat, pinwheels, bubble wand
Tactile Trail Fidget pop, sequins, weighted softie
Visual Oasis Glitter bottle, emotion cards, mirror
Audio Shelter Noise-reducing earmuffs, rainstick
Instructional Trail: Steps 1 & 2
1 Expedition Launch: The Body Weather Report
10 Minutes • Whole Group
Gather on the rug in a circle. Introduce the concept that every explorer encounters rough weather on the trail. Just like the sky can be sunny, stormy, foggy, or windy, our bodies experience shifting internal weather.
Teacher Prompt: "Put a gentle hand on your heart. Is it beating like a calm river or a fast racing jeep? Are your shoulders loose or tight like clenched rocks?"
Key Framing: Emphasize that the Quiet Corner is never a punishment or 'time-out.' It is an explorer's cozy basecamp for recharging energy.
2 Unveiling The 4-Step Calm Routine
10 Minutes • Direct Instruction
Present the 4 steps that guide every student through using the corner safely and productively:
1. SPOT
Notice fast heart, clenched fists, tears, or racing thoughts.
2. STEP
Give quiet hand signal to teacher; walk with soft fox feet.
3. SETTLE
Flip the 3-minute sand timer; choose 1-2 sensory tools.
4. SHINE
Replace tools neatly; re-join class with refreshed focus.
Trauma-Informed Principle: Always allow voluntary self-selection. If recommending the corner to a dysregulated student, frame it as an invitation ("Would your body like to visit the calm camp for 3 minutes?" ) rather than a mandate.

Lesson Phases 3 & 4
3 Guided Sensory Station Rotations ("The Trial Trek")
18 Minutes • Small Group Rotations
Divide class into three trail teams. Each team rotates through the 3 simulated mini-stations (5 minutes each + 1 minute transition) so every student tests calming tools before experiencing emotional dysregulation.
Base 1: Breathing
Students trace the Starfish 5-Finger mat and use pinwheels to practice slow 4-count exhales.
Cue: "Inhale the flower, gently blow out the candle."
Base 2: Touch & Weight
Students explore tactile sequin fabric, squeeze silicone sensory dough, and rest a 3 lb lap-buddy soft toy.
Cue: "Notice how firm pressure grounds our body."
Base 3: Visual Calm
Students shake the swirling glitter bottle, observing slowly descending sparkles until they settle at the base.
Cue: "Our thoughts settle just like the glitter."
4 Debrief, Toolkit Reflection & Calm Oath
7 Minutes • Reflection
Students complete their Calm Toolkit Worksheet by identifying their top go-to reset tools. Close with the unison Calm Explorer Pledge : "When big storms blow inside of me, I stop, I breathe, and I feel free!"
Tiered Accommodations & Scaffolding
Kindergarten Focus
Use picture-only cue cards. Pair with an adult co-regulator during the first 2 weeks. Practice physical whole-body animal breaths (Bear Breath, Bunny Breath).
Grades 1–2 Focus
Introduce the 3-minute sand timer independently. Encourage students to log feelings on the corner dry-erase thermometer before and after their reset.
Neurodivergent / IEP
Provide noise-canceling headphones for auditory sensitivity. Add non-verbal desk pass (a wooden leaf token) so the student can visit the corner without speaking.
The 4 Golden Corner Agreements Post visibly in corner
1. One Explorer Only 1 child at a time to ensure peace and privacy.
2. Gentle Hands Treat all soothing items with care and kindness.
3. Flip the Sand Turn the 3-minute timer as soon as you sit down.
4. Ready Return Put tools back and return to your desk with soft steps.
