Phase 1: Body Radar Hook & Somatic Check-In (7 Minutes)
Body Radar Sheet
Distribute the Body Radar Warmup . Guide students to understand that worry is not just thoughts in our heads—it shows up in our physical bodies first.
Teacher Script Prompt: “Put your hand on your chest for a second. When we get nervous about a hard math problem, a loud sound, or a tricky playground moment, what does our body do? Does your heart tap dance? Do your shoulders climb up like earmuffs? Circle those clues on your radar!”
Phase 2: Direct Instruction & 5-4-3-2-1 Walkthrough (12 Minutes)
Slide Deck
Display the Grounding Crew Slides . Explain the concept of an “anchor” that pulls our busy brains out of the worry storm and plants our feet firmly on the ground right here, right now.
The Brain Science (Kid-Friendly)
When we look, touch, hear, smell, and breathe, we give our brain real work to do. The worry alarm turns down because we are safe in the present room.
The Crew Anchor Gesture
Teach the “Anchor Press”: gently press both feet flat to the rug or floor, rest hands open on thighs, and count down backward on fingers from 5 down to 1.

Phase 3: The Mission (15 min)
Students transition into sensory detective roles with the Five Senses Mission Activity .
Silent scanning: First 2 minutes in complete calm silence for sights and textures.
Sensory stations: Allow touching desk tops, pencil grips, denim jeans, or smooth notebook covers.
Listening ear: Turn down lights slightly; challenge students to hear 3 quiet room sounds.
4
Phase 4: Calm Harbor Journal (8 min)
Students solidify their personal trigger plan and commit their emergency sensory toolkit to memory.
Identify their #1 body warning sign (e.g., knot in stomach).
Select their go-to sensory focus sense (sight, touch, or sound).
Practice taking their 1 deep “Anchor Breath” before turning in papers.
Common Misconceptions & Coaching Tips
“I can’t smell or taste anything in the classroom!”
Clarify that smells can be subtle (pencil shavings, freshly opened book, apple from lunchbox). For taste, students can recall the taste of their morning mint toothpaste, water from their bottle, or take a deep savoring exhale.
“Grounding makes my worry disappear instantly, right?”
Explain that grounding is like a brake pedal on a bicycle. It doesn’t make the road flat, but it slows the speed down so you can steer safely and think clearly.
Differentiation & Support Strategies
Emergent Writers
Allow students to draw pictures or use sensory stickers instead of writing full sentences for the 5-4-3-2-1 log.
Sensory Sensitive
Provide tactile objects with predictable pleasant textures (felt squares, smooth river rocks, velvet ribbon).
High Restlessness
Incorporate whole-body grounding: pushing palms against the desk, stomping feet 3 times, or chair push-ups.
Crew Closing Debrief Questions
• “Which sense pulled you out of your worried mind the fastest? Why?”
• “When is one specific moment this week you could test your 5-4-3-2-1 crew powers?”

How to stop the worry storm, calm your body radar, and reset your brain with the 5-4-3-2-1 countdown.
Welcome, Crew Member! Prepare for mission launch. Slide 1 of 9
Your Body Radar
Step 1: Notice Clues
Before worry gets big in your thoughts, your body sends signals. Which clues do you feel first?
Drumming Heart
Your heartbeat taps fast like little running footsteps.
Tight Shoulders
Shoulders creep upward toward your ears like turtle shells.
Fizzy Hands
Hands squeeze into tight fists or feel fluttery and restless.
When your radar buzzes, it’s time to drop your anchor! Slide 2 of 9
What is Grounding?
The Brain Reset
The Worry Storm
Worry pulls our minds into “what if” questions and racing thoughts about things that haven’t happened.
Result: Your brain thinks there is an emergency right now!
The Sensory Anchor
Using our five senses tells the brain: “Look around. I am safe in this room right now.”
Result: Muscles unclench and your calm thinking brain turns back on!
Let’s practice the 5-4-3-2-1 countdown together! Slide 3 of 9

Light & Shadow
Notice where sunlight hits the floor or creates a shadow.
Crew Check: Point your eyes at 5 items silently. Slide 4 of 9

Second Mission Step
Notice 4 Things You Can TOUCH
Reach out gently or notice what is already resting against you. Feel each texture and temperature.
#1 Desk Top
Is it smooth, hard, or cool to your fingertips?
#2 Clothing
Feel the soft cotton sleeve or rough denim pocket.
#3 Feet on Floor
Press your shoe soles down. Feel the solid floor supporting you.
#4 Warm Hands
Rest palms on your lap. Feel the warmth of your hands.
Crew Check: Unclench your fingers as you touch. Slide 5 of 9
