8th Grader Insider Wisdom (Hallway Codes)
1. Walk on the Right: Treat hallways like a highway. Never stop in the dead center to chat!
2. Double-Pack: Grab materials for 2 classes at once so you skip unnecessary locker runs.
3. Bathroom Timing: Use advisory or lunchtime restrooms; 4-minute passing runs are too risky.

The Middle School Shift
Empathy Check
What 6th Graders Fear
- • Locker will freeze while the tardy bell rings.
- • Getting lost in crowded, fast-moving hallways.
- • Accidentally walking into the wrong grade wing.
What Your Mentorship Gives
- • Patient dial drills until unlocking feels automatic.
- • Insider shortcut maps and stairwell navigation tips.
- • A friendly 8th grader face greeting them every morning.
Key Mentor Rule: Never make fun of a stuck lock—every single 8th grader struggled too!
Week 1: Locker & Route Mastery
Step-by-Step Action
1
Break the Code
Teach the rhythm: Right 2 turns past 0, Left 1 full circle past first digit, Right straight to third digit.
2
Walk the Crunch
Walk their actual passing route between their furthest classrooms during advisory. Time the walk together!
3
The 2-Class Rule
Show them how carrying books for two consecutive periods cuts locker visits in half and eliminates tardies.
Session Goal: 6th grader completes 3 successful locker unlocks in under 20 seconds each.
Week 2: Mapping Safe Havens
Campus Support System
Key Campus Destinations
Walk your mentee to physically locate the Counselor's office, Attendance desk, Nurse, and Media Center. Knowing where to knock removes anxiety.
Roleplay Real Scenarios
Practice what to say when: arriving late to class, forgetting a homework folder in another room, or asking a teacher for a hallway pass.
Takeaway: Strong students aren't the ones without problems—they are the ones who know who to ask.

Cafeteria Survival Code (Discuss with Mentor)
The middle school cafeteria can feel noisy and high-pressure. Plan your daily routine:
Table Seating Plan
Where do you usually sit? Who is your anchor friend?
The "Full Table" Move
If your usual spot is full, where is your backup table?
Quiet Lunch Havens
Can you go to the library or counselor club on quiet days?
Healthy Friendships vs. Drama Traps
Green Flags (Keep Close!)
- • Celebrates your good grades or wins without jealousy.
- • Listens when you speak and includes you in group chats.
- • Lets you have other friends without guilt or jealousy.
- • Tells the truth kindly and never spreads rumors behind you.
Red Flags (Step Back)
- • Makes jokes at your expense in front of other kids.
- • Demands you stop hanging out with old elementary friends.
- • Uses the silent treatment when they don't get their way.
- • Dares you to break school rules to prove you are "cool."
Boundary Defense Scripts (Practice Saying Aloud)
To Peer Pressure:
"Nah, I'm good. Not trying to lose my phone or get detention."
To Gossip / Drama:
"I haven't heard that, and I don't get into other people's business."
To Copying Work:
"I can explain problem #3 to you, but I won't hand you my paper."
Mentor's 8th Grade Wisdom
"My friend group changed between 6th and 7th grade, and here is how I handled it..."

Middle School Social Truths
Real Talk
Circles Shift
Elementary friend groups often drift apart. Reassure your mentee that changing friends is natural, not a failure.
The Cafeteria Maze
Finding a lunch table is one of the highest anxiety moments in middle school. Teach them how to spot open seats with kindness.
Drama Defense
Give them simple phrases to stay neutral: "I'm not picking sides," and "That sounds like a private conversation."
Mentor Wisdom: Share how you handled your own friendship changes when you were in 6th grade.
Week 3: The Green Flag Drill
Interactive Activity
What To Practice Together
- • Review the Green Flag vs. Red Flag table in the handbook.
- • Ask: "Who in your classes makes you laugh or feel relaxed?"
- • Practice the 3 boundary scripts aloud until they feel natural.
Mentor Roleplay Challenge
Pretend you are a peer asking to copy their homework during homeroom. Have your mentee deliver their boundary line clearly and without apologizing.
Rule of Thumb: True friends respect boundaries; fake friends make you feel guilty for having them.
Week 4: The Backpack Intervention
Organization Lab
The Purge
Empty the bottom of their backpack. Toss crushed chips, gum wrappers, and scrap papers.
The Class Sort
Ensure every subject has a dedicated folder or tab. Put loose papers in their proper home.
The Evening Set
Show them how setting their bag by the door at night eliminates morning panic and missed buses.
Pro Tip: Mentors who show their own organized binder make a huge impact on 6th graders!
Mentor Mindset: Listen First
Coaching Secret
Avoid Doing This
- • Don't jump in immediately with "Here's what you gotta do..."
- • Don't dismiss their feelings: "Oh, that's no big deal."
- • Don't look at your phone or glance around the room.
Do This Instead
- • Nod and say: "That sounds really frustrating, tell me more."
