The Big Idea: When Things Don't Go Your Way
Sometimes things happen that we don't like and cannot change right away. In these moments, we stand at a fork in the road with two different paths we can choose: Fighting It or Letting It Be.
Visual Example: Raining During Recess Time
Path A: Fighting It Battling reality
Inner Thoughts:
"This isn't fair! Why does it always rain on our turn?! It ruined everything!"
Fights the weather that nobody can change.
Makes feelings bigger, hotter, and harder to handle.
Result: The fight stays stuck inside your body.
Path B: Letting It Be Accepting what is
Inner Thoughts:
"I don't like that it's raining, but it's happening right now."
Acknowledges the truth without arguing with reality.
Allows muscles to loosen and the mind to settle.
Result: Clears space to decide what helps next.
Important Golden Rule
Letting it be does NOT mean you like it or agree with it. It simply means ending the fight inside your body so you can find your calm.

Listening to Your Body, Shifting Thoughts, and Next Steps
4th Grade SEL
Reflection: What Happens in Your Body?
When my body fights the moment:
Clenched fists, tight jaw, racing heart, stomach in knots, hot face, held breath.
When my body lets it be:
Shoulders drop, hands open, slow full breath, pulse slows down, muscles soften.
Where in your body do you feel tension first when you start to fight a situation?
Practice: Shifting the Mindset
Guided Scenario The cafeteria ran out of your favorite lunch choice.
Fighting Thought:
"This lunch is ruined! I refuse to eat anything else!"
Letting It Be Thought:
"I'm bummed, but they ran out. I will pick something else."
Your Turn Think of a real or common situation you can't change right away:
The situation (e.g. art project got smudged, ride was late):
A "Fighting It" reaction would be:
A "Letting It Be" shift would be:
Wrap-Up: What Helps Next?
"You don't have to like what's happening to get through it."
When something cannot change yet, what helps your body feel even a tiny bit better? (Check all that apply):
Take three slow, deep breaths
Drink a cold sip of water
Unclench my hands & drop my shoulders
Focus on what I can control right now
My Power Statement: What can you tell yourself to help you get through a moment you can't change?
Finish this sentence: "I don't have to like this, but I can..."
Tip: Acceptance is not giving up — it's freeing your energy for what you do next!
