What is an "Instigating Trap"?
An instigating trap happens when someone says or does something on purpose to push your buttons, egg you on, or get you into trouble while they watch the drama unfold. A Trap Buster knows how to spot the bait and step over it!
1
Trap Dossier: Four Ways People Set Traps
The Spectator Trap (Audience Bait)
Calling you out loud in front of a crowd so you feel pressured to react to protect your pride.
The Gossip Relay Trap
Whispering: "Did you hear what they said about you?" trying to make you confront someone else.
The Double-Dare Trap
Challenging your courage ("You're scared!" or "Bet you won't do it!") to bait you into breaking rules.
The Sneak Poke Trap
Making subtle faces, quiet noises, or nudges when the teacher looks away to make you explode first.
2
Field Investigations: Analyze the Bait
Case File A: Four Square Showdown Location: Recess Blacktop
During recess, Marcus hits a ball that barely brushes the chalk line. Jax jumps up and shouts to the whole waiting line: "Out! He is so out! Unless Marcus is too scared to play fair!" Everyone starts looking at Marcus.
1. Which trap type is Jax setting?
2. What reaction does the instigator want?
3. If Marcus takes the bait and starts screaming, what happens next?
Case File B: Cafeteria Whispers Location: Lunch Table 4
Nina sits down next to Sam and whispers: "Did you see how Chloe laughed when you dropped your tray? She's telling everyone you're clumsy. You shouldn't let her get away with that." Chloe is sitting two tables away, quietly eating an apple.
1. Who is the actual instigator here?
2. What trap is Nina setting for Sam?
3. How could Sam verify the truth before doing anything?
