Math Stamina Lesson Plan
Tier 2/3 Counseling Executive Functioning • Sustained Attention
Session Length: 30 Mins
Math Stamina Lesson Plan
A structured clinical protocol to build focus endurance, self-monitoring, and cognitive grit during math tasks.
Target Range Grades 3–7 • 1:1 or Small Group
Core Objective Student sustains focus for 5+ minute math blocks using chunking and reset cues.
Root Barrier Working memory fatigue, stimulus distraction, and math-avoidance reflexes.
Required Materials Visual timer, sample math worksheet, yellow highlighter, Pit-Stop Tracker.
Counseling Framework The "3-Gear Math Engine"
Teach this metaphor first to eliminate self-blame
1 Chunk (Clear Lap)
Fold or mask worksheet. Only 2–3 problems visible at a time to prevent cognitive flooding.
2 Anchor (Sprint Mode)
Pencil touching paper; whisper-talk through the step. Hands and eyes locked on current target.
3 Pit Stop (Micro-Reset)
Scheduled 45-second body recharge (shoulder roll, deep exhale, water sip) before next lap.
Counselor Protocol: Pacing & Verbal Guidance
00:00 – 06:00
Phase 1: Validate, Normalize & Rate the "Math Battery"
Rapport & De-Stigmatization
Counselor Action: Open by separating student intelligence from attention fatigue. Math requires more active working memory than almost any other subject; normalize that focus drifts are brain signals, not character flaws.
"Your brain is like a race car engine. Math problems don't test if you're smart; they test how your focus fuel gets used. When you see 20 math problems, your brain panics and burns all its fuel in 60 seconds. Today we're learning how to shift gears so you stay in control."
06:00 – 14:00
Phase 2: Diagnose Personal "Focus Thieves"
Metacognitive Awareness
Counselor Action: Guide the student to identify their top 2 internal and external distractors using the card-sort prompt below.
Internal Thieves
- "I'm going too slow / everyone's done" (Anxiety)
- Mind wanders to lunch, recess, or games (Drift)
- Rushing just to escape the page (Speed-Trap)
External Thieves
- Classroom pencil sharpening, whispering, doors
- Cluttered desk (markers, eraser shavings, books)
- Overwhelming worksheet layout (dense numbers)
14:00 – 20:00
Phase 3: The "Chunk & Mask" Technique (Tactile Strategy)
Executive Strategy
Counselor Action: Take a crowded 12-problem math page. Teach student physical boundary tools: (1) The Half-Fold (fold in 4 quarters so only 3 problems show); (2) Highlighting Target Boxes (draw green box around Lap 1); and (3) The Anchor Finger (non-writing index finger points to the active operator sign +, -, x, / to prevent visual hopping).

Phase 4, Phase 5 & Transfer
20:00 – 26:00
Phase 4: The 5-Minute Focus Sprint
Counselor Action: Set a visual sand or digital timer for exactly 5 minutes. Hand the student 3 math problems at their instructional level.
- Rule 1: Pencil tip stays on the paper chunk until timer rings.
- Rule 2: If mind wanders, say quiet anchor word: "Back to box."
- Counselor Role: Give silent thumbs-up when you catch them self-correcting.
26:00 – 30:00
Phase 5: Debrief & Self-Coaching
Counselor Action: Celebrate stamina over accuracy. Review the feeling of staying with the task.
Prompt A: Metacognitive Review "What did your body feel right before your attention wanted to escape?"
Prompt B: Strategy Ownership "Which trick helped you more: folding the page or the 5-minute timer?"
Student Take-Away Desk Strip (Laminate or Tape to Desk)
Personal Math Stamina Anchor
My Math Focus Pit-Stop Strip Student: ____________________
1 FOLD & MASK Show only 3 math problems at once.
2 SET THE LAP 5 minutes on the clock. Pencil moving.
3 CATCH & RESET Eyes drift? Whisper: "Next number."
4 PIT STOP Lap done! 1 deep breath, stretch hands.
Counselor Clinical Troubleshooting Protocol
Student Shuts Down ("I can't")
Reduce chunk size immediately to one single sub-step (e.g., "Just highlight the plus signs"). Regain momentum before demanding completion.
The "Speed Demon" Rush
Student scribbles random numbers to escape. Introduce the "Speed Bump": Student must verbally explain step 1 to counselor before writing step 2.
Sensory / Body Restlessness
Provide a tactile fidget for the non-writing hand (textured strip under desk, resistance band on chair legs) to absorb kinetic spillover.
Teacher Transfer & Classroom Cues
- • Pre-Flight Cue: Teacher discreetly points to student's desk strip before independent math starts.
- • Modified Volume: Grade the first chunk (problems 1–4) for mastery before assigning the rest.
- • Non-Verbal Check-In: Two taps on desk corner indicates: "Check your chunk timer."
Progress Monitoring Rubric (3 Sessions)
Level 1 (Emerging) Requires counselor prompting every 60–90 seconds.
Level 2 (Developing) Sustains 5-min lap with independent use of desk strip.
Level 3 (Autonomous) Transfers chunking to general math class with >80% focus.
