Step 1: Notice the Alarm SLIDE 02 / 07
Where Does the Setback Hit First?
Before we fix a problem, we have to notice how our body signals distress.
In the Body
Racing heartbeat, clenched jaw, heavy chest, or knots in the stomach.
Physical Alert
In the Thoughts
"Nothing works out," "I ruined it," or spiraling into catastrophic thinking.
Mental Loop
In the Urges
Wanting to shut down, hide, snap at someone, or give up immediately.
Action Impulse
Counselor Prompt: "Which of these three signs usually warns you first that you are feeling overwhelmed?"
Step 2: Reframe the Event SLIDE 03 / 07
A Stop Sign vs. A Speed Bump
Resilience starts with how we classify the obstacle in front of us.
The "Full Stop" Trap
- • Treats mistakes as evidence of permanent failure
- • Focuses blame inward ("I'm just not capable")
- • Result: Freezing up and dropping out
The "Detour" Mindset
- • Views mistakes as data about what to tweak
- • Separates self-worth from current results
- • Result: Resetting and testing a new angle
Counselor Prompt: "Think of a recent setback. Did you treat it like a brick wall or a recalculating GPS?"
Step 3: Downshift SLIDE 04 / 07
The 3-Minute Reset Protocol
You cannot problem-solve clearly while your nervous system is on red alert.
01
Press Pause
Stop speaking or typing. Drop shoulders down away from ears. Unclench jaw.
Physiological brake
02
Extend Exhale
Inhale through nose for 4 seconds, exhale slowly through mouth for 6-8 seconds.
Heart-rate reset
03
Name the Feeling
Quietly label it: "I am feeling frustrated and disappointed right now."
Tames the amygdala
Counselor Exercise: "Let's test step 2 together right now: one slow 4-count inhale, followed by a long 7-count release."
Step 4: Shift the Inner Script SLIDE 05 / 07
Rewriting the Reaction Narrative
We cannot change what happened, but we can change the story we tell about it.
Defeatist Thought
"I completely blew this test. I'm terrible at this subject."
Resilient Reframe
"This study strategy didn't work. I need to review my specific errors."
Defeatist Thought
"They didn't invite me. Nobody cares about me."
Resilient Reframe
"That stings, but one situation doesn't define all my friendships."
Counselor Prompt: "What is a negative sentence your brain repeats when things go wrong? How can we rephrase it right now?"
Step 5: Regain Agency SLIDE 06 / 07
Focusing Your Energy Where It Matters
Persistence fails when we waste effort wrestling things we cannot control.
Outside My Control
- ✕ What happened in the past
- ✕ Other people's moods or choices
- ✕ Unexpected curveballs or bad luck
- ✕ Unfair outcomes or harsh feedback
Inside My Control
- ✓ How I speak to myself right now
- ✓ Asking a trusted person for guidance
- ✓ Making one small repair or study effort
- ✓ Deciding when to try again
Counselor Prompt: "When you feel stuck, what is one thing 100% inside your power to do next?"
