YOUR SEL TOOLKIT
Beyond Just Asking For Help
Teacher Notes: Welcome students and set a positive, safe tone. Briefly introduce the idea of building personal tools for challenges.
Why Independent Strategies?
Asking for help is vital, but so is helping yourself.
Builds Confidence
You prove to yourself that you can handle tough moments.
Develops Resilience
The more you practice, the stronger your "bounce back" becomes.
Gives You Control
You don't have to wait for someone else to fix your feelings.
Self-Understanding
You learn how your own mind and emotions work.
Teacher Notes: Explain why it's important to have independent strategies, even when support from others is available. Emphasize self-reliance.
Strategy 01
Positive Self-Talk
What it is: The internal voice you use to talk to yourself.
Example: Instead of "I can't do this," try "This is tough, but I can take it one step at a time."
Reflect: What are some positive things you can tell yourself?
Teacher Notes: Introduce positive self-talk. Ask students for examples of how negative self-talk can hurt and how positive self-talk can help.
Strategy 02
Reframe Your Thoughts
What it is: Changing the way you look at a situation or problem.
Example: Instead of "Everyone is judging me," try "Most people are focused on themselves; I'm doing my best."
Question: How can you turn a bad grade into a growth opportunity?
Teacher Notes: Discuss reframing thoughts. Give an example like getting a bad grade and reframing it as a learning opportunity.
Strategy 03
Take a Break
What it is: Stepping away to clear your head.
How: Deep breathing, music, a short walk, drawing, or just drinking water.
Share: What is your favorite way to take a quick 5-minute reset?
Teacher Notes: Talk about the importance of breaks. Mention different ways to take a mental or emotional break.
Strategy 04
Set Boundaries
What it is: Communicating your limits and needs to others.
Example: "I need some space right now," or "I'm not comfortable talking about that."
Discuss: Why is it hard to say "No" sometimes?

Before we dive into new tools, let's look at your current "default settings." Think about how you handle stress or social friction right now.
1 When you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or struggling socially, what is the first thing you usually do to try and make it better?
(Try to think beyond just asking for help from an adult or friend!)
2 Why do you choose that particular approach?
