The Why
Establishing clear expectations at the beginning of the year helps students feel secure, understand what is expected of them, and empowers them to take ownership of their learning and behavior.
Preparation
10 Minutes Prep
• Review Slide Deck, Script, and Lesson Plan.
• Print copies of Expectation Categories Handout (1 per group) and My 8th Grade Goals Worksheet (1 per student).
• Gather large chart paper and markers for each group.
• Arrange classroom into groups of 3-4 students.

1 Warm-Up: What Comes to Mind?
5 Minutes
Display Slide 1. Use the script to prompt students for one word or phrase that comes to mind when thinking about "8th Grade expectations." Note common themes.
2 Categorizing Expectations
10 Minutes
Present the categories: Academic, Social, and Personal . Distribute the Handout to each group.
Small groups brainstorm specific expectations for each category on chart paper.
Circulate and ensure groups are thinking about concrete, detailed examples.
3 Group Share & Discussion
10 Minutes
Each group shares one key expectation per category. Facilitate a discussion on why these expectations matter, using the Script to summarize common themes.
4 Individual Reflection
5 Minutes
Distribute the My 8th Grade Goals Worksheet . Students record 1-2 personal goals for each category. Emphasize that this is a personal reflection tool for their own journey.

Warm-Up: What Comes to Mind?

"Good morning/afternoon, 8th graders! Welcome to a brand new school year. I am so excited to be here with you, and I know this is going to be an amazing year for all of us."
"As we kick off 8th grade, I want us to start thinking about what this year means. This is a big year – your last year in middle school! So, when you think about 'expectations' for 8th grade, what's one word or phrase that comes to mind? Shout it out, or raise your hand!"
Look for: 'hard work,' 'friends,' 'tests,' 'fun,' 'responsibility.'

"When we talk about expectations, we're really talking about what we believe should happen or what we hope to achieve. For 8th grade, these expectations aren't just about what I expect from you , but also what you expect from yourselves and what we can expect from each other ."

Academic: "This is about your learning—how you approach studies, class participation, and learning new things."
Social: "How we interact in classrooms, hallways, and online. Being a respectful friend and community member."
Personal: "About you as an individual—growth, well-being, and managing yourself. Organization, self-care, and stress."
