Leo sat at the back of the cafeteria, his thumb scrolling through a forum on vintage analog synthesizer repair. Around him, the roar of the "Normal" was deafening. There was the rhythmic thud of a basketball being dribbled near the gym doors, the loud, repetitive jokes of the guys at the center table, and the constant, invisible pressure to just... fit in.
"Hey Leo, you coming to the tryouts?" Jax shouted from the center table. Jax was the definition of Standard. He wore the right shoes, laughed at the right times, and moved in a pack.
Leo felt that familiar knot in his stomach. The "Default Voice" in his head started its usual routine: Just say yes. You’re weird for sitting here. Nobody cares about old circuit boards. You’re failing at being a normal seventh grader.
But Leo had been practicing a different script. He called it "The Outlier Logic." He took a breath and silenced the Default Voice. He looked at the synth manual in his lap—a complex map of electricity and sound that he actually understood.
