"Good morning/afternoon, everyone! Today, we're going to dive into a super important topic that impacts all of our relationships: empathy. We'll explore what it means to truly understand others and how that understanding can help us build stronger connections and resolve disagreements."
Warm-Up: Explore Empathy (5 min)
SAY:
"To kick things off, let's start with our 'Warm-Up: A Different View' activity. Take a few minutes to silently reflect on the questions on your sheet. Think about a time you saw a situation very differently from someone else..."
(Allow students 2-3 minutes to write. Then, facilitate a brief discussion.)
"Alright, who would like to share a brief thought? What did you notice about how different people can see the same event?"
Connect Empathy to Ethics (10 min)
INSTRUCT: ADVANCE SLIDES 1-4
"Great shares, everyone. Empathy is more than just feeling sorry for someone; it's about deeply understanding their feelings... It's the building block of ethical relationships. It moves us from 'me vs. you' to 'us.' How does truly understanding someone influence your actions?"
Practice Perspective-Taking (15 min)
INSTRUCT: DISTRIBUTE PERSPECTIVE CHART & SHOW SLIDE 5
"Now, let's put this into practice. Fill out your chart for Alex and Maya. Think about what each character might be thinking, feeling, and the reasons for their actions. Then, turn to a partner and share your insights. Did you miss any perspectives?"
Ethical Empathy Discussion (10 min)
INSTRUCT: DIVIDE GROUPS & HAND OUT CARDS
"I'm giving each group an 'Ethical Empathy Discussion Prompt.' Discuss your scenario. How can empathy lead to a fair and ethical resolution? Remember to actively listen."
(After 8 mins, debrief with the class.)
Cool-Down: Reflection (3-5 min)

Take a moment to think about a time when you saw a situation very differently from someone else. It could be about a movie, a news event, or something that happened in your own life.
1 Describe the situation. What was it about?
2 What was your initial perspective or feeling about it?
3 How did you realize that someone else might have a different view? What made you consider their perspective?
4 What did you learn from considering that different view, even if you didn't agree with it?
Be prepared to share some of your thoughts with the class.
