SUPERMARKET SURVIVAL
Teacher Lesson Plan & Facilitation Guide
Grade Level: 9-12
Duration: 60-90 Mins
Format: Printable Game & Worksheet
THE MISSION
Students navigate a simulated grocery shopping trip with a strict cash budget. They must purchase ingredients for three balanced days of meals, master unit pricing to find the best deals, calculate sales tax, and handle sudden budget shocks.
Learning Objectives
• Unit Price Math: Calculate price per ounce/gram to identify the true lowest-cost product.
• Tax & Coupon Math: Apply percentage discounts and calculate 8% sales tax on taxable items.
• Budget Mastery: Allocate a $45.00 budget across 3 days without overspending.
Common Misconceptions
⚠️ Bigger is Better: Students assume bulk packaging is always cheaper per unit. (Simulator features traps!)
⚠️ Taxing Everything: Students apply sales tax to raw groceries. In most states, only processed items are taxed.
⚠️ Pre-Tax Coupons: Applying tax before discounts instead of on the final discounted price.
Required Lesson Materials
For Each Student:
• 1 "Supermarket Survival Worksheet"
• Pencil & Calculator
For Each Group (2-3):
• 1 Store Inventory Sheet
• 1 set of Coupon Cards
For the Teacher:
• Slide Deck projection
• "Life Happens" Event Cards
Pacing & Time Management
Pacing Block Time Teacher Action & Student Task 1. Warm-up & Hook 10m Introduce cash limit. Confront the "bulk item trap" with peanut butter math. 2. Guided Practice 15m Model how to calculate Unit Price, apply coupons, and calculate 8% taxable items. 3. Simulation Game 35m Students work in groups to plan meals, comparison-shop, and write worksheets. 4. Debrief & Review 15m Introduce a random "Life Happens" event card. Recalculate final balance and reflect.

Instructional Delivery & Scaffolding
60-90 Minute Flow
1
Hook & Concept Intro (10 Minutes)
Begin by projecting the **Slide Deck Hook**. Present two options of peanut butter: Brand A (18 oz for $4.50) vs. Brand B (40 oz bulk for $9.00). Ask students: "Which is the smarter buy?" Have them calculate unit prices to discover they are identical ($0.25/oz), proving bulk is not automatically cheaper. Introduce the three core constraints: budget ($45), meal balance, and sales tax.
2
Guided Math Instruction (15 Minutes)
Model calculations directly on the board.
• Unit Pricing: \(\text{Unit Price} = \frac{\text{Total Price}}{\text{Total Units (oz/g)}}\).
• Sales Tax (8%): Only applies to paper products/soda in this simulator. Explain that tax is computed on the discounted price: \(\text{Taxed Cost} = \text{Price} \times 1.08\).
• Coupons: Walk through subtracting instant discount or percentage off.
3
The Grocery Simulation Game (35 Minutes)
Divide students into pairs. Distribute the Store Inventory Sheets and Coupons. Each pair must craft a list of items to feed themselves for 3 days (breakfast, lunch, dinner). They must document unit calculations, track running subtotal, and apply coupons correctly on their **Supermarket Survival Worksheet**. Walk the room to check math.
4
The "Life Happens" Shock & Reflect (15 Minutes)
With 15 minutes left, project or read aloud a random "Life Happens" card (e.g., "You dropped your milk carton on the way to the car; deduct $3.50 to replace it." or "Your coupon expired! Pay full price." ). Students adjust their budget worksheet calculations. Conclude with a class reflection on trade-offs and decision-making.
Differentiation & Scaffolding
For Struggling Learners:
Provide pre-calculated unit prices for the first 3 items.
Allow students to round the 8% sales tax to 10% for easier mental estimation before calculating the exact amount.
Focus only on breakfast and lunch to reduce item count.
For Advanced Learners:
Introduce a waste factor (e.g., "10% of produce spoils, recalculate edible yield cost").
Ask them to calculate the price-per-serving instead of just price-per-ounce.
Add a macro-nutrient target (minimum 60g protein/day).
