Superhero Signal Lesson Plan K-1 Self-Advocacy Workshop
Superhero Signal Lesson Plan
Duration: 45 Mins CASEL: Self-Awareness
Big Idea
Asking for help is a superpower. Every superhero needs a team of trusted helpers to solve tough challenges.
Key Skills
Detecting body signals (stuck/frustrated), using the Superhero Chest Tap gesture, and speaking the 3-part script.
Materials Needed
Hero slide deck, Mission Worksheets, Help Scenario Cards, crayons, superhero cape or badge (optional).
THE 3-STEP FORMULA 1. Spot the Stuck 2. Tap the Signal 3. Speak the Script
"Excuse me [Name], I am stuck on ___. Help please!"
1
Hook: The Superhero Body Radar (10 mins)
Slides 1-3
Gather learners at the meeting circle. Introduce the hero premise: Even heroes with super strength or speed get stuck on math problems, tight shoe knots, or tricky playground feelings!
Scripted Teacher Prompt:
"Put your hand on your tummy. When you feel stuck or confused, what does your body do? Does your tummy get tight? Do your eyebrows scrunch? That is your **Body Radar** beeping to tell you: *It is time to call in your Hero Squad!*"
2
Direct Instruction: The Physical & Verbal Signal (12 mins)
Slides 4-5
Gesture: Two-Finger Chest Tap
Teach students to make peace fingers (or palm flat) resting gently over their heart badge. This lets adults see across a noisy room that help is needed without shouting or melting down.
Verbal: The Clear Hero Voice
Practice the 3 sentence stems with choral echo:
1. Eye Contact: "Look at their face."
2. Specific Need: "I am stuck on [words/zipper]."

3
Guided Practice: Non-Examples vs Hero Signal (13 mins)
Cards & Mat
Show exaggerated contrast roleplays. Students give a "Thumbs Up Hero" or "Cross Arms Fix-It" gesture:
The "Mumble / Freeze" Trap
Slumping down, putting head on desk, or screaming across the carpet: "I CAN'T DO IT!"
The Superhero Signal
Taking a deep belly breath, chest tap gesture, waiting for eye contact, using calm indoor voice.
4
Partner Game & Mission Worksheet (10 mins)
Worksheet & Game
Partners draw a Help Hero Scenario Card. Partner A acts out the stuck situation (e.g., shoe untied, glue lid stuck). Partner B acts as the School Helper (Teacher, Nurse, Recess Monitor). Swap roles so both earn their Hero Badge tokens.
Responsive Teaching & Accommodations
Emergent Readers & ELL
Pair verbal prompts with visual cue cards. Allow the physical chest-tap gesture to stand alone while building sentence vocabulary.
Shy or Anxious Learners
Introduce a discreet desk token (flip a yellow shield card) so they can alert the teacher without having to raise their voice aloud.
Early Finishers / Extension
Have students become "Peer Patrol Helpers" who practice giving encouraging hints ("Try 3 before me!") without doing the work for friends.
Formative Assessment Quick-Check (Check-off During Day-to-Day) Evidence of Mastery
Identifies physical feeling of being stuck before escalating Body Radar
Uses signal gesture without interrupting or shouting across room Physical Signal
Names the specific task or obstacle clearly when helper responds Verbal Script
