Big Question
Do we only listen with our ears?
Our Ears Hear Sounds
Our ears catch words like a radio antenna. But listening is bigger than just hearing!
Our Whole Body Helps!
When our eyes, hands, brain, and heart join in, we understand and show our friends we care!
📢 Try it: Say together: "Whole Body Listeners, READY!"

💖 Think with your brain & heart!
🌟 Challenge: Can you do every motion along with the song? Let's try!
Part 1
Eyes Looking & Ears Catching
Super Sense Team
Eyes Looking
Look toward whoever is speaking—your teacher, a friend, or the book we are reading together!
Super Clue: Looking helps us understand feelings!
Ears Listening
Open your listening ears ready to catch the story, directions, and friendly voices!
Super Clue: Cup your ears gently like radar dishes!
👉 Point to your eyes! Now gently tap your ears! You are ready!
Part 2
Mouth Quiet & Calm
Voices at Rest
Quiet Mouth
Our lips stay closed softly so everyone can hear the speaker clearly.
Bubble in Lips
Hold a gentle bubble of air in your cheeks to remind your mouth to wait.
Hand Goes Up
When you have an idea, raise a calm hand and wait for your turn!
🤫 Let's practice: Take a deep breath in... blow a silent bubble... freeze!
Part 3
Hands Still & Feet Quiet
Body in Neutral
Hands in Lap or on Desk
Still & Safe Hands
Hands stay folded softly in our lap, on our knees, or holding a quiet fidget tool.
💡 Our hands are not poking neighbors or fiddling with shoes!
Feet on Floor or Criss-Cross
Grounded & Calm
Feet rest flat on the carpet or criss-cross like pretzel sticks so everyone has room!
💡 Our feet are not kicking furniture or swinging in someone's bubble!
🥨 Practice check: Put your hands together in your lap. Super safe!
Part 4
Brain Thinking & Heart Caring
The Inside Superpowers
Brain Thinking
Think about the words you hear. Make pictures in your mind of the story or lesson!
Ask: "What is my teacher teaching me right now?"
Heart Caring
Show you care about your classmates' feelings. When someone talks, we give them our respect!
Listening tells friends: "You matter to me!"
💖 Listening is kindness in action!

Hook, Chant & Song Video (8–10 Mins)
Slides 1–3
Gather students on the carpet. Whisper to create suspense: "Kindergarten friends, did you know that your ears are not the only things that listen? Who can tell me what else listens?" Teach the classroom call-and-response song:
🎵 "Eyes are watching, ears are listening, voices quiet, bodies calm!" (2x)
🎵 "This is how we listen, this is how we learn, at carpet time, at carpet time!"
Play Slide 3 Video: Have students follow along with Jack Hartmann's Whole Body Listening song, pointing to eyes, ears, mouth, hands, and feet in rhythm!
2
Direct Instruction: The 7 Whole-Body Listeners (10 Mins)
Walk through slides 4–7, having students touch each body part as you name its "Listening Job":
👀 Eyes: Looking toward speaker or learning materials (not distracting neighbors).
👂 Ears: Open and tuned to speaker's voice; ready to follow directions.
🤫 Mouth: Quiet and closed gently; hold bubbles in mouth if eager to blurt.
🤲 Hands: Resting peacefully in lap, on knees, or holding designated fidget tools.
🦶 Feet: Flat on floor or criss-cross applesauce; respecting shared space.
🧠 Brain & 💖 Heart: Thinking about words and caring about our friends' feelings.
Neurodiversity-Affirming Teacher Note
Listening looks different for every child! Autistic or ADHD students may listen best without direct eye contact, or while rocking gently or using a quiet sensory tool. Frame whole-body listening as "readying our body to learn" rather than rigid stillness.

Kinesthetic Practice: The "Freeze & Listen" Game (8 Mins)
Kindergarteners need gross motor integration to understand self-regulation. Play 3 rounds:
Round 1: Hands
Students wiggle silly fingers in air. Strike chime: freeze hands gently folded in lap!
Round 2: Feet
Students tap carpet softly like rain. Strike chime: lock feet into criss-cross pretzel!
Round 3: Whole Body
Students dance quietly. Strike chime: eyes on teacher, mouths closed, body calm!
4
Station / Independent Work: Matching Sheet (8 Mins)
Transition students to tables. Distribute the Whole Body Matching Worksheet .
Standard Instruction Guide students to draw lines matching body part icons to their listening job illustration. Color their Super Listener Star badge at the bottom.
Scaffolding / ELL Support Model the first match under the document camera. Encourage verbal repetition of each body part name with finger pointing before drawing lines.
