Instructional Journey
Session 1: Decoding Directions
30 Minutes
Introduction & Hook (5 min): Introduce "Strategy Superpowers" for ILEARN. Set an empowering tone and highlight the importance of understanding directions using the slide deck.
Strategy Spotlight (15 min): Deep dive into decoding directions (multiple-choice, choose all, negation like "NOT" or "EXCEPT"). Break down complex instructions and identify keywords.
Guided Practice (10 min): Distribute Worksheet 1. Model decoding strategies and focus on *why* certain words are critical.
Session 2: Steady Strength
30 Minutes
Warm-up & Review (5 min): Briefly review decoding directions from Session 1 with a quick recall prompt.
Strategy Spotlight (15 min): Focus on pacing and stamina. Since ILEARN is untimed, emphasize not rushing, taking "brain breaks," "flagging for review" to maintain momentum, and smart guessing to avoid getting stuck on one problem for too long.
Guided Practice (10 min): Distribute Worksheet 2. Work through scenarios about perseverance, managing "getting stuck," and prioritizing accuracy over speed.
Session 3: Conquering Jitters
30 Minutes
Warm-up & Review (5 min): Review pacing and stamina. Discuss how staying steady helps keep anxiety low.
Strategy Spotlight (15 min): Anxiety reduction techniques: deep breathing (4-4-4), positive self-talk, relaxation, and visualization. Focus on growth mindset.
Guided Practice (10 min): Distribute Worksheet 3. Identify triggers and create personal positive affirmations.
Session 4: Review & Reflect
30 Minutes
Warm-up & Recap (5 min): Quick review of all superpowers (decoding, stamina, anxiety).
Strategy Spotlight (15 min): Effective review techniques (re-reading, checking calculations) and post-test reflection. Focus on learning from the experience.
Guided Practice (10 min): Distribute Worksheet 4. Set personal goals for the test and conclude with an encouraging message.

Session 1: Decoding Directions (30 Minutes)
Intro & Hook (5 min)
Start with Slide 1.
"Good morning/afternoon, everyone! Welcome back, Strategy Superheroes! Today, we're diving deep into the world of ILEARN test-taking strategies. We know tests can sometimes feel like a puzzle, but we're here to give you the ultimate tools to solve them and feel super confident. We're going to start with perhaps the MOST important superpower: understanding the directions!"
Advance to Slide 2.
"Take a look at Slide 2. Your brain is amazing, and we're going to learn how to use it to its fullest! Our goal is to stay calm, think smart, and believe in ourselves. Who agrees that a calm brain helps you think better?"
Strategy Spotlight (15 min)
Advance to Slide 4.
"Every direction is like a secret map. If you misread the map, you might go the wrong way! We need to be detectives and look for three types of important words:"
Action Keywords: Words like 'Describe', 'Compare', or 'Identify'. They tell you what to DO.
Number Keywords: Words like 'Select all', 'Choose one', or 'Give three'. They tell you HOW MANY.
Negations: Watch out for 'NOT' or 'EXCEPT'. These flip the meaning!
Discuss examples of 'Which is NOT a mammal?' and how to underline keywords.
Guided Practice (10 min)
"Fantastic! You've got your direction-decoding tools. Let's put them to work with Worksheet 1. We'll do the first few together."
Distribute Worksheet 1. Work through problems 1-3 modeling the process of identifying keywords.
Session 2: Steady Strength (30 Minutes)
Strategy Spotlight (15 min)
Slide 7.
"On the ILEARN, you aren't racing a clock. It's untimed! That means your superpower isn't speed—it's Steady Strength . First, Don't Rush! Take all the time you need to read every word. Second, use Brain Breaks . If you feel tired, take a 10-second stretch right in your seat. Why is a break better than rushing through?" (Allow sharing)
"Third, Flag it & Move on . If you get stuck, don't let it drain your energy. Flag it, move to a question you *know*, and come back with a fresh brain later. And finally, Smart Guessing . If you really don't know, eliminate the 'no-way' answers first. Every elimination makes your guess stronger!"

Mission Brief
The ILEARN test is untimed ! That means your goal isn't to be the fastest—it's to be the most accurate. Use your Steady Strength to stay focused and keep your brain energized.
Part 1: Pacing & Persistence
1. You notice a classmate finishes their test while you are only halfway done. You start to feel like you should hurry up to catch up. Why is rushing a bad idea on an untimed test?
2. You reach a long reading passage with several difficult questions. Your brain starts to feel tired and foggy. What is a "Brain Break" you can take right at your desk to recharge your stamina?
3. You have been working on Question 7 for a long time and are still completely stuck. If you stay on this one question, your energy might run out. What should you do instead, and how does this help you?
Part 2: Quality & Accuracy
4. When you encounter a multiple-choice question that seems impossible, you decide to use "Smart Guessing." Explain the steps you would take to make your guess as strong as possible.
5. You finish the last question on the test. Since there is no time limit, what are three things you should check for before you officially submit your work?

Session 1: Decoding Directions
1. Main Idea/Evidence: Underlined: identify, main idea, two, evidence, support. Interpretation should mention finding the central message and providing two details to prove it.
2. Not a Fact: Boxed: NOT. Underlined: Select one. Interpretation: Look for an opinion. Correct Answer: C.
3. Prime Numbers: Underlined: circle all, prime numbers. Interpretation: Find all numbers divisible only by 1 and itself. Correct: 2, 7, 11, 17.
4. Compare/Contrast: Underlined: Compare, contrast, personalities, actions, Write a paragraph, 5-7 sentences. Interpretation: Discussion of similarities/differences in character traits and behavior in a specific length.
5. Science Scenario: Key things: Examine carefully, list exactly THREE, focus on what does NOT belong (negation), provide an EXPLANATION for each.
Session 2: Steady Strength
1. Why Rushing is Bad: Rushing leads to "silly mistakes" like misreading directions or bubbling the wrong choice. Accuracy is the priority since there is no timer.
2. Brain Break: Examples: Close eyes for 10 seconds, take 3 deep breaths, shoulder rolls, or stretching fingers. Goal is to reset focus.
3. Stuck on Question: Flag/bookmark the question and move on. Reason: Saving energy for questions you CAN answer prevents burnout. Return to it when your mind is fresh.
4. Smart Guessing: 1) Read all choices. 2) Eliminate "no-way" (obviously wrong) answers. 3) Choose the best remaining option. Never leave it blank.
5. Three Checks: 1) Answered every question. 2) Re-read directions to ensure all parts were answered. 3) Checked for calculation or spelling errors in extended responses.
Session 3: Conquering Jitters
1. Personal Anxiety: (Answers vary) Common: heart racing, sweating, thoughts like "I'll fail."
2. Positive Affirmations: Example: "I am prepared," "I will do my best," "One question at a time," "I can handle this."
3. Physical Technique: Example: Box breathing (In 4, hold 4, out 4, pause 4) or Progressive Muscle Relaxation (tensing/releasing fists).
4. Difficult Question Strategy: Use self-talk to stay calm, take a breath, then flag and move on to maintain pacing. Return later with a fresh mind.
5. Growth Mindset: View it as a chance to grow, stay resilience through mistakes, and realize effort matters more than fixed ability.
