Executive Functioning
Focus & Stamina
Learning Objective
Students will increase on-task independent focus time during a challenging task, monitor their stamina using a visual stopwatch, and accurately log their minutes.
Key Vocabulary
Focus (eyes & mind), Self-Control (body calm), Stamina.
Pacing Arc: 1. Baseline (5m) → 2. Stopwatch Tool (7m) → 3. Challenge (10m) → 4. Log (4m) → 5. Debrief (4m)
1 Phase 1: Set the Baseline (5 Minutes)
0:00 - 5:00
Teacher Script
"Good morning, focus athletes! Put your hands on your head if you've ever started doing classwork, and suddenly your brain wanted to look out the window, play with your eraser, or tap your neighbor's shoe. Everyone does that! That is normal. But today, we are training our self-control muscles. Self-control means YOU are the driver of your body and attention."
Teacher Action: Ask students: "Yesterday, when we did quiet math/reading, how long could you work before feeling fidgety?" Accept 2-3 quick answers (e.g., 2 minutes, 4 minutes). Write down the classroom baseline average: 3-4 minutes on the board.
2 Phase 2: Explain the Stopwatch & Self-Control (7 Minutes)
5:00 - 12:00
Teacher Script
"Look at this giant stopwatch on our board. A stopwatch does not get tired, it just keeps ticking forward one second at a time. When we start our Self-Control Stopwatch, your goal is to stay locked into your work until the timer reaches our target. Let's learn our 3 Golden Stopwatch Rules from our Protocol Guide:"
1. Eyes on Work
Gaze stays glued to your paper, not roaming around.
2. Pencils Moving
If stuck, re-read or jump to the next puzzle. Don't freeze!
3. Bubble Silence
Zero whispering. Protect your neighbors' thinking bubbles.
Demonstration: Model a quick 15-second non-example (slumping, turning around to check the door) versus an example (deep breath, tracing finger under word, focused grip). Ask students to give a thumbs-up when they spot true focus.

Instructional Arc (Continued)
Phases 3 to 5 (Minutes 12:00 - 30:00)
3 Phase 3: The Focus Challenge (10 Minutes)
12:00 - 22:00
Teacher Script
"Materials are on your desks face down. Today's challenge is the Brain Sprint Challenge. It has number riddles, secret codes, and a mirror drawing! Our stopwatch will count up to 8 minutes. If you feel an itch to stop, use our Focus Rescue: take one deep balloon breath, tell yourself 'I can do this,' and keep going. Ready? 3... 2... 1... Start your engines!"
Teacher Role During Challenge:
- Project the classroom visual timer / stopwatch prominently.
- Circulate silently. Do not answer casual questions; use non-verbal cues (tap sheet gently).
- At Minute 4, whisper a silent group cheer: "Halftime heroes! 4 minutes of pure stamina achieved!"
4 Phase 4: Log Results (4 Minutes)
22:00 - 26:00
Teacher Script
"Pencils down in 3, 2, 1! Take a huge stretch! Look at the timer—you just worked for 8 whole minutes without stopping! Now take your Minute Master Log Sheet. Color in 8 full minute slices on your dial. Then circle your self-control score."
Check for Understanding: Ensure every student fills in their baseline comparison: "My baseline was 3 minutes, but today I powered through 8 minutes!"
5 Phase 5: Discuss Improvement & Strategy Debrief (4 Minutes)
26:00 - 30:00
Turn-and-Talk Prompt (1 minute): "Tell your partner: What distraction tried to pull you away, and how did your self-control defeat it?"
Closing Synthesis:
"Focus isn't magic—it is a superpower you build with practice. Tomorrow, we will see if we can push our Self-Control Stopwatch all the way to 10 minutes! Give yourself a silent high-five!"
Differentiation & Support Strategies
For Emerging Stamina (Needs Support):
Allow a personal desk timer or miniature visual sand timer. Provide a 1-minute silent stretch break after 4 minutes, then restart.
For Advanced Stamina (Extension):
Add bonus brain-puzzle layers on the back of the challenge sheet. Challenge them to monitor their internal pacing without glancing at the clock.

The 4 Stopwatch Rules
1
GET READY (Set)
Clear extra toys and papers away. Only your pencil and challenge sheet on the desk. Sit tall in your focus chair.
2
START THE CLOCK
When the timer begins, enter your thinking bubble. Eyes glued to your paper. No talking, no waving, pure quiet effort.
3
BEAT DISTRACTIONS
If someone drops a pencil or walks by, freeze your eyes on your paper. If stuck, take one deep breath and keep trying.
4
LOG YOUR MINUTES
When the chime sounds, celebrate! Check the stopwatch, color in your minutes on your Time Log, and track your progress.
