The Resilience Compass: Bouncing Back Stronger
Intro & Hook: What is Resilience?
SLIDES 1-2 • 10 MIN
Context: Welcome students. Focus on the 'Compass' theme of navigating life's ups and downs.
Teacher: "Good morning/afternoon, everyone! Today, we're going on an important journey. A journey inside ourselves to discover a superpower that helps us deal with tricky situations and challenges. Look at our title slide: The Resilience Compass: Bouncing Back Stronger. What comes to mind when you hear 'bouncing back'? What does that mean?"
(Allow students to share thoughts. Guide them towards ideas of recovering, getting back up after a fall, etc.)
Teacher: "Exactly! Bouncing back is a huge part of what we call resilience . Who can tell me what resilience means to them? Or, think about a time you faced something difficult and had to keep trying. What did that feel like?"
Your Mindset Matters!
SLIDE 3
Teacher: "Think about how you talk to yourself when something is hard. Do you sometimes hear a little voice that says, 'I can't do this!' or 'This is too hard for me!'? That's what we call a fixed mindset . It's when we believe our abilities are set and can't change."
Teacher: "But what if we could change that voice? What if it said, 'I can't do this yet , but I can learn!'? That's a growth mindset . Which mindset do you think helps us bounce back stronger? Why?"
Coping Strategies
SLIDE 4
Teacher: "Having a growth mindset is a great start, but we also need tools in our resilience toolkit. Let's look at some examples on the slide."
Talk it out: "Who do you talk to when you're feeling down or stressed?"
Take a break: "What are some healthy ways you take a break?"
Problem-solve: "What steps do you take to try and solve a tough problem?"
Mindfulness: "Has anyone ever tried taking deep breaths to calm down?"
Interactive Activity
SLIDES 5-6 • 20 MIN
Teacher: "Now, it's time to put these strategies into practice! We're going to work in groups on scenario cards. Your task is to identify the challenge and brainstorm resilient responses using your toolkit and a growth mindset."
(Circulate among groups. After work time, facilitate sharing. Ask: What challenge did you face? What strategies did you use? How did mindset help?)
