Part 1: Warm-Up • Problem Picture
(Display: Slide Deck - Title Slide)
Teacher says: "Good morning, problem-solvers! Today, we're going on an adventure to become 'Problem-Solving Pathfinders.' Sometimes problems can feel like a big maze, right? You might feel a little stuck or unsure where to start."
(Pause for student responses)
Teacher says: "Let's imagine a small everyday problem. What's a tiny problem you might face at school? Maybe you can't find your favorite pencil, or you forgot your snack, or you're trying to open a tricky container?"
(Allow 2-3 student responses, validate their examples.)
Teacher says: "Great examples! Even small problems need a solution. Today, we're going to learn a superpower: a 4-step plan to solve *any* problem, big or small! This plan will be our map, guiding us to the solution."

Part 2: Introduce the 4 Steps
(Transition to: Slide Deck - 'Ever Felt Stuck?' Slide)
"We've all felt a little stuck, right? But with our map, we'll learn to navigate. Our map has four important steps."
(Transition to: Slide Deck - 'Our Secret Map!' Slide)
"This map is our secret weapon! It's simple, but super powerful. Let's look at Step 1."
Step 1 Detail (Slide 4)
"Step 1: Understand the Problem. This is like looking at the map before you start walking. What do you think that means?" (Allow responses) "Exactly! You need to read the problem carefully. What is it asking you to do? What important information or numbers do you already have? It's about getting the main idea and knowing your starting point."
Step 2 Detail (Slide 5)
"Step 2: Plan Your Strategy. Now that you understand the problem, you need a plan! This is where you think about how you're going to solve it. Will you add? Subtract? Draw a picture? There can be many ways to solve a problem, but you need to choose the best path."
Step 3 Detail (Slide 6)
"Step 3: Solve It! This is where you actually do the work! Follow your plan and show your work clearly. If your first plan doesn't work, don't give up! You can always go back and try a different strategy."

Problem 1: Maya's Sticker Adventure
Step 1: Understand
Question: How many stickers does Maya have now?
Info: Started with 12 stickers. Friend gave 5 more (+). Gave 3 away to brother (-).
Step 2: Plan
First, add the 5 stickers she got from her friend.
Then, subtract the 3 stickers she gave to her brother.
Strategy: (12 + 5) - 3
Step 3: Solve It!
12 + 5 = 17
17 - 3 = 14
Answer: Maya has 14 stickers now.
Step 4: Check
Does 14 make sense? Yes, it's reasonable since she gained 5 and only gave away 3. The answer fits the question asked.
Problem 2: The Bake Sale
Step 1: Understand
Questions: 1. How many did Mia bake? 2. Total baked?
Info: Leo baked 24. Mia baked half as many (24 ÷ 2).
Step 2: Plan
Find Mia's cookies: 24 divided by 2.
Find total: Leo's 24 + Mia's result.
Step 3: Solve It!
Mia: 24 ÷ 2 = 12 cookies
Total: 24 + 12 = 36 cookies
Answer: Mia baked 12 cookies. Altogether they baked 36.
Step 4: Check
12 is half of 24. 36 is 12 more than 24. Both answers are reasonable.
Problem 3: The Library Books
Step 1: Understand
Question: How many new books are left?
Info: 35 adventure, 42 science. 15 books borrowed (-).
Step 2: Plan
Add adventure and science books to find the total starting amount.
Subtract the 15 books that were borrowed.
Step 3: Solve It!
Total books: 35 + 42 = 77
Books left: 77 - 15 = 62
Answer: 62 new books are left in the library.
Step 4: Check
Starting with about 80 books (35+42=77) and losing 15 should leave about 60-65. 62 is correct.
The Pathfinder Method
UNDERSTAND Read 2x, circle keywords, identify the question.
PLAN Choose +/-/x/÷, draw a visual, pick a strategy.
SOLVE Write vertical math, show labels, check calculations.
CHECK Reasonableness, "Does it make sense?", reread question.
