Level 1
Independent Scanning: Give 5–10 seconds of processing time. Watch if student looks toward the meter or reaches for the break card on their own.
Level 2
Non-Verbal Gestural Prompt: Make eye contact with a calm expression, point to the desk meter, or gently tap the Break Card. Zero spoken words to prevent cognitive overload.
Level 3
Low-Affect Whisper: Lean down and whisper close: "Card time. Let's do 2 minutes to reset." Hand the card directly into their palm.
Level 4
Co-Regulation Escort: If screaming or thrashing starts, do NOT debate or lecture. Say calmly: "I'm keeping you safe. We are going to the reset corner together." Debrief only after heart rate returns to baseline.
High-Impact Strategies (DO)
• Praise the proactive break: "Brilliant job using your card before getting stuck!"
• Keep break area quiet, sensory-friendly, and predictable with a visual 2-minute sand timer.
• Re-entry is easy: hand him a fresh sharpened pencil without referencing the glitch.
Pitfalls to Avoid (DON'T)
• Never say: "Calm down, it's just a pencil." Minimizing validates the child's shame.
• Don't withhold the break card as a punishment or demand completed work first.
• Avoid talking or asking questions during peak fight-or-flight agitation.
