Target Group
IDD Clients
Duration
90 Minutes
Method
Verbal / Movement
Learning Goals
-
Understand that conflict is just a difference in ideas and is not always a fight.
-
Identify personal "Mad Buttons" (triggers) that make us upset right away.
-
Practice the PEACE Plan to fix problems respectfully through on-screen games.
Instruction Style: Keep it Simple
This lesson uses No Paper. Use the Conflict Compass Slides to guide everything. For IDD clients, use big gestures (like deep breaths) to reinforce the words.

The 90-Minute Flow
Time Note: All blocks include 5 minutes for transitions and movement.
1
The Start: Not a Fight 20 Min
Use Slide 2. Ask: "Is a conflict always a mean fight?" Help them see that wanting the last cookie or having a different favorite color is a conflict, but it's not a fight.
Flash Fire (Slides 3-6): Rapid-fire word game. STAND UP to answer!
2
Style Choice & Swap 30 Min
Four Corners (Slide 7): Label corners of the room with the animal icons. Have clients move to the one they like most.
Style Swap (Slides 8-9): Act out the "friend lost game" story. Shout styles like "Teddy Bear!" to make actors change their behavior instantly.
3
Mad Buttons & Me-Talk 15 Min
Mad Buttons (Slide 10): Remind them that Mad Buttons can happen even if no one is "fighting."
Me-Talk (Slide 11): Focus on simple feelings. "I feel sad when you don't listen because I want to talk."
4
Story Showdown 25 Min
Use Slides 12-13. Remind the group: "Using the PEACE Plan keeps a conflict from TURNING into a fight."
Teacher Pro-Tip
If clients get overwhelmed, repeat "P for Pause." Sometimes just sitting down for a moment helps. Success is in the effort, not the perfect answer!
